£40 a year for garden waste collections

I think we're the last council in the North East to charge, Rishy's North Yorkshire have been charging for years and are currently twice that amount.
Bedale, in North Yorkshire, introduced green bin charges started charging about 2 years back at £40, now £42.

Genuine question, do Middlesbrough Council expect a rise in fly-tipping if they add this charge?
We will be the last local council to add this charge,I don't believe that there has been a huge problem with extra fly-tipping with any of them when they introduced the charge. But the council will take a strict view on fining people who fly tip.

It hasn’t stop people fly tipping their garden waste for years under the hedgerow in Eston and that’s before this happens.

Darlo have it, about £35 pa. You can take it to the tip for free so if you factor in your petrol and your time its good value and it is fairer on those without gardens not subsidising folk in bigger houses.

Eston isn't covered by Middlesbrough Council.

That’s just an example what happening near to me before this happens. If the councils can’t afford the collects how can they afford the personal to investigate any fly tipping.

How come Grove Hill library got pulled down and Acklam's is still open? I think our kids might need it more here.
Great question, I don't know the answer as I wasn't about when that happened, but I'll tell you what I think will have happened.

Grove Hill would have been underused, so closed, Acklam would have closed also but I suspect it will be run by volunteers, so costs the council little if anything.

As I say it all happened before my time, we still have a library in Berwick Hills, but that's thanks to having the Neptune centre so not needing a building or extra staff.

The only Library we have to continue with as a statutory duty is the central library, I could be wrong but I think councils only have a duty to have one central library.

Yep, I get that, we (Middlesbrough) have secured (external) funding for wardens who have a licence to investigate, fine and even prosecute offenders, unsure if Redcar and Cleveland have this. Indeed the funding we have means we have been able to not only keep our wardens but increase the number and their duties.

I currently don’t pay for garden waste in Eaglescliffe ( Stockton Borough council) so not sure about your claim that it’s the last local council to charge for Garden waste.

I live in South Wales and it’s £53 per year!! It started at £40 five years ago?? They put down to rising costs. Go figure??
Actually, getting rid of rubbish is very very expensive, even garden waste, for some reason some people think councils get paid by selling their rubbish, sadly this is far from the real truth. Middlesbrough's waste bill is due to increase by £3m in 2025, that's an extra £3m we will have to find from the ever decreasing budget. Recycling is different, we save money because we don't have a tonnage fee to pay like we do with general waste, but it costs the council a lot more to sort and deal with recycling so there isn't a huge saving for councils.
