War war 2 filums question

There is a movie on youtube title "Sole Survivor" which has a B-25 Mitchell down the deaert with ghost crew around and one member missing.
I think that is the one - thanks. William Shatner in it as well, didn't remember that but could recall Richard Basehart (Voyage to the bottom of the Sea fame).

If you fancy a "different" WW2 film, try "Jojo Rabbit" directed by Taika Waititi. A young German boy an enthusiastic if slightly inept member of the Hitler Youth has The Fuhrer as an imaginary friend, he discovers his mother is hiding a young Jewish girl in their attic, at times funny and devastatingly sad.

If you have Amazon Prime it is free on there I believe.

There is a fantastic book written about a Germans soldiers experiences in Russia called 'The forgotten Soldier'. If you only read one book about the reality of what is was like, suggest you check it out.

Read quite a few true stories of the persecution of the Jews, the last one, true story, when a son followed his father in to Auschwitz

I've since downloaded a few resistence books on my kindle, the present one is set in Norway

Just another couple of film recommendations for you Erimus. 'Flame and Citron' (2008). Danish film about the resistance with Mads Mikkelsen in it. And 'Welcome to Dongmakgol (2005) from South Korea. Possibly my favourite Korean film and I do watch a hell of a lot of Japanese and Korean cinema.

Well, the film that I mentioned was set during the Korean war but it is more of an anti war film and it is beautiful and really moving. It wrong foots you completely at the start and then becomes something that you really weren't expecting. And Kang Hye-jung is absolutely adorable in it. I cried my eyes out the first time that I watched that film

I have the Forgottrn solder book - I keep threatening to give it to charity. I read the first 50 pages over 30 years ago and never opened it since. I think I will give it another go.

Cross of Iron was a Sam Peckinpah film - not bad especially at the beginning, but a bit too Hollywood view of the Eastern Front.

The trouble with doing flims from the German side is that they have to be strongly anti-Nazi. The Nazis were awful but what interests me is how they brain washed young men and boys to give everything for what they considered the greater good - it was not disimilar on the Soviet side although the Soviets had so much more resource wise they knew they would win eventually. Ultimately a true film on the Eastern Front would become an anti-war film as Das Bot and Stalingrad are.

The give a flavour of the Eastern Front - Konigsberg was a major German City - the capital of Prussia
80% of city was destroyed - 50,000 German troops were killed defending it in vain. mainly in 3 days of fighting. At end of the battle all the German adults were marched out to one of the many Stalin Prison camps. The children were left in the ruins to fend for themselves for a while. Eventually anyone of German extract was removed and the City was rnamed Kalingrad and the Soviet move dion Russian civilians. During the battle on one surburb 3,000 women and children were allegedly raped, beaten and stabbed to death by the Soviets. (Metgethen). I suspect revenge killings for German atrocities 3 years earlier.

D DAY deaths for the allies were 4,400.

I thought Generation War (three 90 minute films) covered the German story well, with different levels of subservience to the third Reich.

Cheers Bear66

I will have a look out for Generation War.

I still feel there is a a lot of convenient forgeting in Germany of what happened in WW2, so it often becomes a small minority of fanatics forced us to fight, hand over Jews, kill Jews, handover anyone who was different etc. Most fought to the death as Konigsberg showed, it was only 4 weeks from the end of War. They may have felt they would be killed by the Soviets, but they still were proudly German and in general did not run away or easily surrender. Around 40% of Konigberg had voted Nazi in free elections in 1933. Today German/Austrian people will say the Nazis, but quite a number must be talking about their relatives. To me many German solders were like the US solders sent to fight in Vietnam. most believed quite strongly in their country.

My favourite war filum is Hannibal Brooks, not sure why, and Where eagles dare, it might be looking back with nostalgia but my adult mind remembers it being played every year at the P&E Christmas filum show, a brown paper bag with a mars bar, an orange and a tip top drink 😮

The dangers of nationalism are not confined to those two countries.

However I would take issue with your assessment of US soldiers in Vietnam. Certainly by the later period of the war the soldiers mostly just wanted to make it through the tour and go home. Watch the Ken Burns documentary "The Vietnam War" if you can, it has appeared on the BBC in the past but you might find it on Netflix, Prime or such though it does tend to come and go it is 18 hours split into 10 episodes and gives a very good insight into how the war happened, why it went on so long and the thoughts of those on both sides.

The heroes

If you enjoy WW2 films (Filums) I really reccomend this if you can track it down. Don't let a young Jason Donovan put you off. It was a bit like an early Band of Brothers in that it was shown over a few episode. Brilliant true story which I still watch at least once a year.
