Is Redcar a nice place to visit?

We often spend time in that neck of the woods visiting Whitby, Staithes and Saltburn etc but is it worth also visiting Redcar?

I love Redcar, admittedly I grew up there and now live down south so there is some nostalgia involved but:

The dunes, the stray are great for walks. I also like a wander round the amusement arcades.

I used to love living in Redcar - the proximity to the beach the dunes and like several others have said it’s great for walks.

I was saddened how run down the town centre was last time I visited.

And of course the Racecourse. Stunning views of the Eston Hills. If you like the horses.

Unless you're going for a walk along the beach then I wouldn't bother. The town centre is run down. Saltburn is much nicer. Marske is small but a trip to Talking Tides brewery is worth the effort if you're up that way even if it is in the middle of an industrial estate.

Redcar has so much potential but for whatever reason just doesn't have the same feel to it as the likes of Saltburn, or even Guisborough. I think they are trying but it all feels a bit half-arsed.

The new cinema is great but the high street is crap, pubs aren't great either and there's not one restaurant in the whole town I would recommend. Best place for a drink and some (limited) food is probably the Beacon. The Boathouse at the Boating Lake is also nice for a stop off and good views.

As someone who lives very close to the seafront, I find it a bit disappointing that it's better to travel elsewhere (Saltburn, Marske, Guisborough, Great Ayton) for a day out.

I always found Redcar a bit a strange mix. So close to Industry, no harbour, no river, no parks, very flat, the main road a bit away from the sea, and it was very spread out, but also felt hemmed in. Then suddenly there is a race course, almost the last thing you would expect. Later I found Kirkleatham which was a hidden jewel to me.

There are relics of Redcar that suggest in say the past it was quite a swinging place for music - Grand Old hotels/ballroom, Coatham Bowl for bands like the Rolling Stones, famous folk club, as sort of mini Scarborough.

New Cinema and Cafe Bar looks almost iconic , never been in yet.

Sea Breeze - excellent fish and chips as good as the best in Whitby and a lot lower price.

Visit Kirkleatham f you like a bit of history or birds of prey and the walled garden will be nice in a few years time when the plants mature.

Sadgit mentioned the other day that the walk from the Majuba Car Park to the South Gare and I can't disagree with him. The beach is beautiful and although I never thought I would like them, the wind turbines have grown on me.

I never understood the vertical pier and feel it is an eyesore (one man's meat is another man's poison) but do think the council is trying with Redcar. The High Street is no different to most seaside towns with huge empty shops and nothing to entice you in.
