Is Redcar a nice place to visit?

Redcar beach is excellent and on a nice day well worth a long walk on.

The vast majority of old seaside resort towns have decayed badly since planes took us cheaply to the Med, instead of trains taking us cheaply to our coast.
We toured the entire GB coast in 2020 and saw every coastal resort/town.
Trust me there are a lot worse than Redcar - troubled as it is.

Withernsea near you Brian is an example.
(not so) Great Yarmouth and Weston (not so super) Mare are bigger examples.
I agree, Withernsea is a craphole, however, the Cold War nuclear bunker at RAF Holmpton near Hollym is well worth a visit.

The town is desolate, but the beach is decent for walk with the dog. The little area they are creating at majuba is coming along nicely too.

I lived there up until 2012 but haven't been back in just over 10 years. I'd be interested in what its like comparatively from then to now. I know that they have some new bars compared to back then, but I don't think even back then we ever went out to eat much so I don't know whether thats changed. I lived in different parts of town, so would be interested to know whats changed (and what hasnt).

I’ve lived here all my life and love the place but yes the High Street is very rundown at the moment - as are most medium size town centres. There are plans to knock down the shops next door to Pacitto’s to create a direct link from the High Street to the promenade with restaurants and cafes on it so hopefully this will rejuvenate the area.
Good restaurants/cafes include Armando’s, Central Park and the Zetland or One Up for a brekkie.
O’Grady’s, The Pig, The Beacon and a few of the micropubs on Station Road are all worth a visit as well.
The top end of the High Street is best avoided tbh

I've always loved it, cousin lives there on the racecourse estate, and I've worked there steelworks and on the housing and had plenty of very good workmates live in Redcar.

As a kid we went there very often, loved the place. For me its the beginning of the marvellous North Yorkshire Riviera, with fantastic family memories. Although I'm in Stockton the area is still home to me.

I used to travel across towns in the North of England with work and there are many places that are less fortunate than Redcar.
The High St is run down, but that’s no different to most towns nowadays. I was in Ashington last week and that was equally glum.
I’ve lived here 21 years now, love walking out to the beach whenever I feel like it, I’ll be off down the gare on my bike this morning for a bit of fresh air.
I walked along the beach last summer on a midweek evening and was amazed at how busy it was; horse riders, skateboarders, aerobics on the beach. The new crazy golf and kids play area gets busy and there are still plans to build an arena.
The pubs in the northern quarter are ok, live music most weekends.
Kirkleatham walled gardens, museum and the owl centre are 5 mins drive away.

It’s not all that bad.

The Beacon will be reopening in line with school holidays from this upcoming half term so get you binocs out. The council closed it out for far longer than they should have. All those kids were identified within a month and parents visited and police involved with cautions , its hardly like the rest of the towns kids were going to think that's a good game. On a clear day you can see the upper tier and roof girders of the SoL plus the high rise flats and the harbour cranes etc.
The 'new thing this week is there are pavement lights installed from Marske to near Green Lane, lol. From the photos it looks like a landing strip for microlights or paragliders, but the walkers and runners are happy now. They even put in a different colour light every 100m to help the runners figure their distances :)

Central Park is very weird imo, could do with being bigger and in a better location, the Middlesbrough one is very popular, I know they're related but not the same company as such, but surely emulate some of the success of the Boro one and expand the menu.

I think Redcar has a lot of potential, as long as the arena folk don't get their way - which seems to be the entire point of the mighty Redcar group in fact. More needs to be made of the beach front and they need to get some good quality housing down that end and do up some of the old run down buildings. It'll never be like them videos from decades ago, but no reason why it cant be a nice place to visit and a nice place for locals with more things to do and better leisure/retail/easier on the eye

I'm hopeful that the arena will fail in the next stage which is the planning permission.

Have you seen the 3D design of it? Surely there is no chance that gets built.

yes, when the weather is nice though. sea breeze / oliver’s are lovely chippies, then you’ve got the brazilian patisserie cacau, which i’d recommend. pacittos for an icecream of course.

then, as others have mentioned, the walks on the seafront. i love going to the gare to take photos. if you’ve got kids there’s a new mini golf that’s opened up on majuba car park, but the amusements are always a good option.

there’s more to do than people think (but if it’s ***** weather then i agree with the opposing sentiment lmao)

edit: oh, i forgot locke park! get yourself on those pedalos - they’re wonderful. can knack your back mind

Not sure what yoose lot are moaning about ?

Loads to do in Redcar.👍
The Clock stop cafe and the Brazilian one

The Halt Ritas Pantry.
Walk from Majuba right the way past the stray and back on the Prom.
