Defending for their goal

Engel is just coming back having run the length of the pitch to put a cross in and the majority of the way back too. There’s no defensive support from the midfield, VDB is then forced to commit, but nothing can excuse the goalkeeping
I wasn't digging engel just implying that he wasn't back in time as he was tracking back that being said as he basically like all games has to play as two men, no one was covering for him, which a midfielder should of but IMO the three who where chasing Clarke one of them should of put a challenge in on him but the rest after he released it was poor too.

Nothing matters if Glover throws his cap on the ball which he should have done
Awful goalkeeping
Agree but he also made an excellent save from Clarke in the first half at his near post and come and caught a couple of very difficult balls from crosses etc

It’s my biggest frustration with us at times. We don’t commit enough cynical fouls to stop counter attacks.

Ayling was on a yellow so probably didn’t want to do it but a midfield can track across and do it.

So many other sides do it to us. We’re way too soft at times
Sunderland did it on Silvera in the second half

It was Engel's (excellent) ball as well for Greenwood's chance 2nd half which he probably should have done better with.
And first half for the ball Azaz put over the bar.

One thing on Engel he needs to be more demanding of his teammates and when he has space Drive into it, all game today to many players too the safe option.

Engel had acres for most of the game, he could do with watching how friend used to attack the space when he was our LB, he seems a massive confidence player and seems to play within himself for long periods of every game l, frightened to make a mistake yet when he does relax can be quite an effective player.

I blame the forward players for both making the same run and not pulling out the box for Engels cross.

Akpom would have dropped back and scored it. Wouldn't have been a problem.

Crazy how much stick Engel gets at the moment. Ayling was ran ragged today and was way over committing for their goal.

For what its worth I dont think either Engel or Ayling had bad games either. We are lacking goal scorers!
Really difficult game for Ayling today but he never stopped, Jack Clarke is a really top championship player and he will give any RB a difficult afternoon!

Engel was in no way responsible for the goal in my opinion. Yes, we got done too easily on the turnover, but, as I said, it's the lack of a Clayton type that costs us repeatedly. Do we have any defensive minded midfielders on the books never mind in the 1st team squad?

story of the season and it was obvious last season as well

We are poor defensively. The goals against column tells you this. We will not do anything in this divison till we sort it

Ayling caught pressingclarke too high was the catalyst, left space behind him to be exploited.

Then we were out of balance in defence which we struggled to recover from. Rav showed a bit of naivety covering a man fry had to be trusted to cover, he did change his mind and got tight enough to the goal scorer to make it so he shouldn’t have been able to score mind..which is where the final mistake came in from glover

People justifying Engel’s part in the goal seem to be missing the fact it was a very poor cross. I don’t blame him for not getting back, he tried hard to make up the ground, but the cross needed to be anywhere in front of Coburn and Silvera, and that includes in the stand.

Fry’s awful positioning/ awareness also contributed to them creating the chance which Glover should have saved, obviously.

We've had this debate before about Engel having to cover pretty much the whole of the left side by himself. Whoever starts wide left tends to drift inside.

If you have a traditional winger like Downing playing in front of him, and Engel decides to overlap then at least you know that winger will most likely drop back to cover for him.

I think this is where we really miss a Clayton type of midfielder. In that situation leading up to the goal he most likely would have committed a professional foul against Clarke, and the goal never would have happened. Howson was far too passive leading up to the goal and should have recognised that we were in trouble and took one for the team.

Also regarding Howson, he probably shouldn't have chased after Clarke, particularly if he didn't have any intention of taking him out. Ayling closed Clarke down. It's so frustrating to watch it back and see that Howson and Ayling both closed him down but neither made an attempt to win the ball, or commit a professional foul. Howson should have picked up Bellingham, and VDB most likely would have stuck with the goal scorer, but VDB got drawn away from the goal scorer due to the run of Bellingham.

the way we attacked before the counter was frustrating. i had no problem with engel getting forward at the time as it honestly felt like we were in the ascendancy anyway.

his ball into the box wasn’t bad (as in, it wasn’t shanked straight of the play for eg) - it was just the wrong choice. he would’ve been better off going front post as we had no one in the line of the cross. silvera making the exact same run as coburn and advancing into the same space as him didn’t help.

everything from there was a desperate play of catch up, concluded with a really poor moment from glover 🫣

I suppose we see different things, I in no way blame fry for that goal as there are 3 other players around Clarke as he plays the ball wide.
I don't blame Fry for the goal but in real time I was screaming for him to commit to Clarke once he'd started to move across. It was Fry's hesitancy that gave Clarke the time to cut back and find the free man.

It shouldn't have got to the point where Fry was making that decision, but, he made the wrong choice - having seen it again on TV I still think the same.

Howson should have stopped Clarke by fair means or foul. After that Fry had to either sit deep and hold some sort of shape to let VdB do the same, or commit fully and, at worst, push Clarke wide. Fry ended up in no-man's land.

Poor defending, but even so, Glover should be saving it.

He's an extremely poor keeper and we need Dieng back ASAP.

There is no surprise whatsoever he didn't get called up for Australia.

He's terrible. He was very very lucky against Chelsea in that first leg.

He's cost us more goals and points than saved us.

Forss did exactly that a few times when on the pitch. The referee had a lengthy talk with him about it at one point.

I don’t think it was a poor cross at all. He missed the defenders and put it absolutely on a plate for anyone who made a run no way across the box. Unfortunately Coburn was heavily marked and closer to the goal and Silvera ran into the exact same space for some reason.
