Time to make facemasks mandatory everywhere public?

There's a reason masks are worn, to stop the spread of infection. Next time you're having surgery talk to the surgeon and ask him not to wear one because he'll touch his face more.

Oh behave - highly trained clinicians spending their lifetime with others surrounded by PPE and leading edge hygiene practices
v a member of the great British public exercising common sense

If you've never worn a mask before then you will touch your face many more times than you usually would. Surgeon's have had years to get used to wearing them and so don't have the problem. Also, they are wearing them because your body is open and chances of infection from any dirt is higher with an open wound than a specific disease from just breathing on people.

Open heart surgery, who mentioned that?

I had surgery last week, everyone in the theatre wore s mask, this time it included the patient. Any idea why?

No it isn't. I've also looked at the risks of wearing a mask and for me personally the risks to my own health means I won't be wearing one.
I'm quite happy to go to court about it, I can guarantee you I would win.

Also I'm sure the thousands of deaf people, those with asthma and others who for whichever mental health reasons can't wear a mask are not selfish either.

As @1finny has basically said, people wearing a mask are more likely to touch their faces more, adjusting the mask etc. Also a mask makes a perfect damp breeding ground for a multitude of nasty bugs and bacteria to thrive in.

Unless you have a health condition which prevents it, personally I think everyone should wear one when in public spaces. As someone said its not about protecting yourself but more protecting others if you have it.

So what you are saying is sacrifice my own health for the benefit of others?
Look if people want to wear a mask that is fine, no problems with that.

Is there actually any scientific proof that a face mask causes health problems though? Certainly wouldnt imagine wearing one for a short space of time would cause too many issues

I mean it IS an act of selfishness. Even you have given the benefits to YOURSELF. Which is again, ignoring the fact that the mask is to help slow down the spread to others. I accept the fact you think it is worse for your own health but I'd be curious to know the evidence you have for this

Ask and you shall receive. Although I won't be sharing any medical reasons with you which mean I won't be wearing a mask along with other factors as frankly it isn't any of your business. 😊

Funny that. My Mrs had surgery last week at Tees Valley Hospital. She had an oxygen mask on during surgery like most people do. Not a face mask

Pretty much all of the issues on that relate to people not wearing the mask correctly, which clearly is an issue that needs further guidance but certainly doesnt show any evidence that they are unsafe to wear unless you have a condition which prevents them being used.

May seem a simplistic way of looking at it, but would face masks have been used in medical settings/industry etc for years had they not been safe to wear? Its surely the cheapest and easiest way to reduce transmission of the virus

I suspect that some people gain a false sense of invincibility when wearing a mask and don't bother with the other stuff like distancing and not touching surfaces etc. A bit like the cycle helmet thing - but with viruses rather than buses and lorries.

Also, if you are infected with no symptoms, the mask becomes a big reservoir of warm damp viral soup and we're not really skilled in how to manage that - unlike say a trained health worker.
