Jacob Greaves

None of them would be as comfortable at LCB.

Is he better there than Bola or Bilongo would be a fairer comparison.

Wilder has mentioned a few times about wanting a left footer.
And he doesn't want square pegs in round holes. He's stressed this to the club.

We've been left with unbalanced squads for years now and I feel some fans have come to accept it as the norm.

Just watching the obligatory YouTube package. He looks absolutely superb. Get him signed up.
He's good, my lad raves about him.

He's an upgrade on Bola playing there IMO. He frees up Bola as cover at LWB too or as a more defensive option if Giles is too attacking.

We don't seem to be linked many centre mid yet, but depending on who we sign for the Tav and Howson positions will be interesting to see.

If he isn't better than Fry, then a lot of importance is being attached to being left footed. This LCB novelty assumes that only one formation can ever be used and also that other defenders won't get suspended or injured.

Fry was absolutely awful when he was playing on the left.

It was only when he was moved out of that position again that he returned to looking like the good centre back he is, he's the last of our defenders that I'd be playing in that position.

Which volume of your Notebook was this then? I know you have quite the list.
From last season kid đź‘Ť

I don’t normally place too much emphasis on YouTube compilations but that video of Greaves is very impressive. Good tackler, can bring the ball out, a big lad so presumably decent in the air. I can’t say I remember seeing him play before so was a bit surprised watching what type of player he seems to be. A tough, ball-playing defender by the looks of it. Bring it on.

The LCB is very different to the CB in our formation. Fry might be an 8/10 player at CB but only 4/10 at LCB. If Greaves is a 7/10 LCB then that is better.

There was a similar conversation on the Ben Gibson thread yesterday. He is left footed but is equally unsuitable to play the LCB in Wilder's formation. The LCB is more of an LB than a CB and traditional CBs like Fry aren't suited to play there. We expect them to do a lot of build-up play, often in the opposition box.

Most defenders aren't suited to that, they've grown up barely crossing the halfway line and playing short passes out wide or to midfielders to play the football.

There IS an emphases on being a Left footed LCB in the formation and tactics we play. If you’ve played football you’ll know it’s difficult to receive a ball on your right foot and to pass across yourself as the ball is delivered to the LWB going back on himself. Greaves would be a quality signing for us, I dare say if he had been playing on Saturday we would not of conceded that goal.

But as usual Boro will prevaricate and someone else will step in last minute and say “ yeah we’ll give you the extra hundred grand you want”!

Greaves may not be a better defender/footballer than Fry but what's important is the fact he's left-footed.

Fry should be competing with Lenihan for the CB position this season.
His stats would suggest that he isn't as good at defending but is one of if not the best CBs at coming out with the ball and getting involved higher up the pitch and the best left footed CB last year at doing that. Being just 21 as well makes him a real investment too

I think the reason we got done was largely because Lenihan pressed too high rather than anything to do with the LCB. Once they passed through Lenhan they had a 4 vs 3 overload and we were in big trouble

Not sure the order in which we sign them will matter, simply that we get all the positions filled that we need. Isn't that Man Utd kid on loan meant to be the Tav replacement?
We can't get a kid in to replace Tav of 150 Championship games experience. That's not an adequate replacement
