Johnson accused of 'contempt' for north by snubbing Doncaster for Kiev

It’s a silly needless headline. Boris needs to go but we need to stand firm on the side of Ukraine all the same.
 
For me he's doing as much, if not more than any other country in his support towards Ukraine & its people
 
Thats fine, when he messes up he's bombarded on here, thats the way it is, then when ge does the right thing he's again bombarded on here, for who he is
 
So you believe that he made all these plans with the Tories in the north with the ‘red wall conference’. Why would you knowingly dupe people and have people attend an event knowing full well you weren’t going. Why would you risk looking bad when you’re trying to win their votes.
 
Some absolute belters on here. The usual pro Brexit, pro Tory deluded who still haven't worked out that Johnson is in this for himself.

They need to understand, this is all deflection. We are not actually at war with Russia and until there's any threat to us then his full attention should be on the cost of living crisis and Covid-19, yes Covid-19!

He was clearly taken by surprise with the visit to Kiev by other foreign leaders. On Friday morning the NRG was told he was on the train to Doncaster. Instead he organises a very expensive flight to the Ukraine, spends an hour with Zelensky then home in time for tea.

He's an absolute bell-end.

Really? Like it's refugees still caught in endless red tape when trying to come here?

We've provided lots in weapons, but way behind the US and even much smaller countries who have provided much more per capita.

Boris Johnson is using Ukraine as a self PR booster whenever he's in the mire here, it's so obvious and transparent.

The EU leaders knew far enough in advance that he was going, to be able to plan their own trip for one day earlier, when the people who Johnson had meetings planned with didn't even get the cancellation of their own meeting with him? Fantasy land.

Even if so, disrespectful of the people who were expecting him in the North.

No, the EU leaders was a scheduled pre-planned visit, as of yesterday morning he was due in Doncaster for a meeting with Northern business leaders and Red Wall MP's, when rumours started circulating that he wasn't going to be there, the organiser phoned Johnson's office and was told he was on the train and would be in attendance.

The story I have is that he was in for a rough ride due to his failure to make any progress with many of projects promised in his levelling up pledges and the latest revelations regarding corruption by trying to illegally employ his then mistress as his special advisor, he was due to visit Kyiv next week but personally decided that he would try and rearrange to yesterday so to avoid the negative press regarding the potentially hostile reception he was going to receive in Doncaster and questions about further corruption allegations.

Whilst standing with Ukraine is very important it's also salient that we don't get confused between doing the right thing and using it as a smokescreen to distract from issues of importance at home, nothing changed in the Ukraine yesterday that made Johnson's meeting with Zelensky essential at such short notice, but there were things in the U.K. that Johnson was keen to avoid.

You mean the super secret trip that his own MP's, conference delegates and media didn't know about?

But yeah, those nasty EU leaders and their preplanned meetings are all about sticking one up against poor Johnson, bless him.
