Five criminally overrated bands (in your opinion) and five criminally underrated bands (also in your opinion)...

I donā€™t have any really strong opinions on music actually. Iā€™m rooted listening to the ancient pop tunage on stations like absolute 80s and Absolute 90s and Ken Bruce in the mornings. And Graham Norton at the weekends on Virgin. Occasionally Iā€™ll dip into pick of the pops if itā€™s a year from the late 70s 80s or 90s

Unlike most of you I donā€™t mind some quality pop from the likes of Duran Duran, Wham, ABBA, even stuff from Girls Aloud, Kylieā€™s later stuff and Robbie Williamsā€™ first few albums.

And I bloody love The KLFā€¦.

Iā€™m not a rock / guitar music fan at all but donā€™t mind acts like Queen or the Manics. Stadium bands like U2, Coldplay, Muse, Foo Fighters etc and acts like Bruce Springsteen just leave me cold and so I suspect I would put them in the over rated catagory. Find stuff like Ed Sheeran and Adele completely nondescript and boring. Also I never quite got what the fuss was about bands like the stone roses. As for Oasis the first two Albums were world class and superb, the rest were just dross.

Iā€™m more a dance music fan, electronic music, to that end I have followed the pet shop boys since they appeared in the 80s. I would say they are massively under rated - they have produced some quality songwriting over the years and some perfect pop records (West End Girls, Itā€™s a Sin). They are still prolific and producing high quality albums every few years. They constantly keep themselves relevant by working with new contemporary producers and remixers - and if anyone is interested theyā€™ve just remixed a Paul Weller track. Plus you usually get new reinterpretations of their old songs when they go on tour.

So there you go, Pet Shop Boys are under-rated. And if your worried about the hamster thing in the band name Iā€™m not convinced its true.
Pet Shop Boys are a great call actually, some masterful stuff over the years.

And I also am partial to a bit of Duran Duran too šŸ˜Š

Underrated:

My Bloody Valentine
Embrace
Cocteau Twins
Mazzy Star
Eels
Ride
The Wedding Present
Jesus & Mary Chain
Pete Yorn
The Waterboys
Womack & Womack
Hector Berlioz

Obviously- this is all about opinions and if, like Erimus 74 and me you are stuck in the 70's and still wear flares, loons and massive collars with gold chains round your necks- here goes
Over rated -
10cc
Wings
Abba
Brotherhood of Man
The Who.

Under rated
Slade
Smokie
Sweet
Darts
The Carpenters

Oh, In my local there is a thirty something year old man who is convinced that he was born 20 years too late. He knows the words of every ( it seems like) chart song in the 70's and the atistes who sang them.
I love Darts!!!

over:
Stone Roses
Metallica
U2
Oasis
Foo Fighters

under:
The Go Betweens
The Wildhearts
Patty Griffin
Doll by Doll (Jackie Leven)
Cribs

Over:
Gorillaz........................boring boring boring
Kasabian...............as above with an extra boring
Pink Floyd..................great in Syd Barrett era. Pompous rubish afterwards.
Reverend and The Makers..........................their songs are just nothing
Red Hot Chilli Peppers......................I like a couple of singles but they should be buried "Under A Bridge" ;)

Under:
Marcy Playground....................anyone who likes Fountains of Wayne or Semisonic should check them out.
The Decemberists....................just fantastic
The Mountain Goats ..................John Darneille is a genius.
Jonah Matranga/Onelinedrawing/Far/Gratitude/New End Original............................all are him in various guises. Brilliant.
Frightened Rabbit......................tragic loss when their singer took his life.

Haven't seen you posting in a long while @Michael_Vronsky and it's great to see you back - hope you're well (y)

Oh, and completely agree with the sentiments. I have 3 rules in life which are simple to follow... don't trust people who dislike dogs, don't trust people who love olives and especially don't trust people who don't recognise Led Zeppelin as perhaps the greatest of all time ;)
Wee Gord you and I can always share imaginary beers on a Friday, but under your rules we can never be friends.

Overrated? Too many to mention and it's the usual suspects already covered.

Underrated?
Bill Nelson
Doll By Doll
The Pirates
Kraftwerk
The Bhundu Boys

One I should have had in my list of overrated bands is the Courteeners to be fair.

"You're not nineteen forever, pull yourself together"

Such a lazily written, boring lyric but it's regarded as one of their best songs.

Coldplay are the modern day Phil Collins, itā€™s cool to call them $hit despite being popular with the masses

I personally don't dislike Coldplay and there are a handful of excellent songs that I really like. Chris Martin in particular is a really talented songwriter and has a good voice too, but despite all this I find a lot of their music very 'samey' if you know what I mean. I don't get why people hate them or slag them off as much as they do because in essence they're a very good ban I just think they're not particularly exciting.

As a musician I really like Phil Collins too and his greatest hits is reasonably regularly listened to in my house but I can't stand his politics ;)
