Garbage

The fact that Mings was our best player says it all really. Now we see why Southgate didn't make it in League management he's far too conservative when it comes to strategy. The players looked like lost bodies out there at times -- should I go forward ... er no I'll play it safe, shall I pass now,,,,er no I'll wait until everything is safe.

You're playing against a side that is ranked 44, finds goals like lost 5 pound notes and Southgate deploys sometimes 6 across the back-- crazy. We had no outlet no tactical nouse it was simply rubbish.

Sterling and Kane were both poor.

Reece James offered nothing going forwards on the right (compared to his Champ League final display it was like two different people).

Taking Foden off was strange but other than that the players on the pitch should have done much better.

That was such a typical performance of England in a major championship. The players just seemed to expect to score, didn’t seem up for it at all.

As for Southgate, it was obvious at half time the tactics were wrong. To change nothing at half time, and then just change personnel and not tactics as the game went was criminal. He showed tactically he’s learnt nothing and can’t change games that aren’t going his teams way.

Compare today to the Belgium - Denmark game, Belgium were poor and outfought for large parts, but 2 moments of quality changed the game and won it for them. England don’t have that.

It reminded me of the Alegeria game at the 2010 world cup. No intensity and no idea how to break down the opposition.

I agree, it needed changing at half-time. We could have even brought on Chilwell for Sterling, Rashford for Rice or Phillip's and gone 5-3-2 and matched them up.

Southgate was clueless tonight.

Well tbf they did have it against Croatia.

Not good tonight and a disappointing result but you can see by Scotland’s reaction that it was their cup final, and they were ecstatic to get a 0-0.

As uninspiring as it was it will all be very quickly forgotten if we get through our last 16 match. It doesn’t change the landscape that much, Scotland are still probably going home, we are still going to have a tough last 16 match. Nothing’s changed.

As much as Gareth was critical of Mclaren, he is the same manager and I don't feel he has progressed in tactics and team selection one bit. James Ward Prowse would be in my starting 11, never mind not in the squad. Declan Rice is a slightly better Eric Dier.

I can understand why he went with Rice and Phillips again after the Croatia game but in hindsight we only needed one of them starting this game, especially when you consider we were favourites to win.

I can forgive Southgate for starting with them but not for his decision to persist with both of them for the full game.

That’s a fair point but we did actually start the second half quite well. If he’d then gone all out to win on 65 minutes we could have risked losing the game and for what? A draw isn’t that bad a result if you take away the “Auld Enemy” aspect.

Its debatable whether we should even want to win on Tuesday.

It wasn’t the result, it was the performance. Players just didn’t look up for it and looked bereft of ideas.
Scotland would always be up for it and make it difficult, there just didn’t seem to be that same desire from England.

In truth I didn’t expect there to be. To us it’s just a draw in a group we might easily win. To them it’s the opportunity to humiliate us and give themselves an outside chance of going through. Their fans are dancing in the fountains at drawing 0-0 with us whereas if we’d won 3-0 people would have said “yeah but it’s only Scotland”.

No performance would have been good enough tonight if the result was only 0-0.

Yeah, fair to say 0-0 would always be a poor performance from an England point of view.

Individually picking out Harry Kane, is he playing with an injury? In both games he’s looked so completely off the pace, his general movement looks slow and awkward. He needs to stop dropping deep as he’s not having any impact on the game, he’d be better off just getting himself in the box.

Agree about Kane. Dropping deep has worked for Spurs for him but it hasn’t worked at this tournament. It’s as if he wants to somehow shoulder the most responsibility as captain but he’d be better off just playing the goalpoacher role he used to play well and let the chances come to him. Yes he looks as though he might not even be fully fit. Given that a draw on Tuesday isn’t a “bad” result I’d be tempted to rest him on Tuesday.

We could have risked losing the game?

We were playing the 3rd lowest ranked team in the competition, yes I get that it's Scotland they will always play better and try harder against us, but for crying out loud they are Scotland.

If we had removed a defensive midfielder for Grealish and kept Foden on the pitch we do not lose that game, we might still draw granted, but the probability is we would have won it.

Other nations have to play teams that will raise their game against them and yet the good teams always find a way to win, we always find an excuse when we don't.

To start with two defensive midfielders against Scotland is laughable, to finish the game with two defensive midfielders because we didn't want to lose is criminal. No doubt Henderson will come in for either Rice or Phillips on Tuesday and that wil be the big change.

When we are playing France or Spain I have no issue with the two holding midfielders, but against Scotland for crying out loud, it's Scotland the third lowest ranked team in the competition!!!

Rant over 😁
