A debate I have often had with a few of my mates is whether U2 are actually any good or not. I apprecaite I'm in the minority somewhat given that they're one of the biggest bands in history, but personally I would think you could just about make a decent EP from their entire collection. Oh, and Bono is a knob.

It's fashionable to bad mouth U2 these days and their output has been pretty mediocre for a while but they were a great band at their peak. Everything upto Zooropa is excellent to me, Pop and All That You Can't Leave Behind good too. I gave up after them.
My dislike of them isn't a new or fashionable thing. There are many bands who become mediocre in terms of albums after a while including some of my favourites - Pearl Jam, Metallica, AC/DC etc. With U2 it's something different I just never really liked them bar about 4 or 5 tracks.

Each to their own though the world would be boring if everyone had the same tastes.

If we all liked the same band...

I'm too young to remember the Beatles, for a few years they really were "bigger than Jesus" it must have been quite extraordinary. Their output was insane it's no wonder they broke up it was unsustainable.

On the subject of U2. Firstly if we are going to exclude every band with a complete knob as a front man we wouldn't have many left. So we can ignore that. There is no doubt that they created some iconic music, Joshua Tree is a masterpiece and I like most of the their early stuff. Recently, not so much. I certainly would watch them at a festival but I doubt I'd pay to see them on their own in a stadium, as I can't see an option for that in the pole I'll abstain.

For me ....

Boy and October were really fresh, different for the time, and superb

War was OK

Unforgettable Fire and Joshua Tree were the peak

Rattle and Hum was OK

Actung Baby was absolute shoite and everything since has been dross

Edit - there needs to be a "were great but are now shoite" voting option

A very fair point Muttley. My favourite band are Guns n' Roses so shouldn't really criticise Bono for being a knob when Axl Rose is equally if not more so.

I hate the fuss and hype and music journo slaver that surrounds them, more than I hate the band itself. For me, most of their stuff I can take or leave but every now and then they do something I really love. 'One' is a truly great song and I have a real soft spot for 'Stuck In A Moment' too. Earlier stuff like 'Sunday Bloody Sunday' and 'New Year's Day' I really liked too. I also had a sneaky admiration for their risk-taking at the height of their success - releasing 'Numb' as a single: really?! Not forgetting the whole 'Passengers' project either.

Much ho-humming in between all the great moments though, and points also deducted for Bono's vast swathes of pretension.

They are one of my favourite bands. They are easily the best live band in history in my opinion. I’ve seen them twice and both were equally as good.

I don’t even think their music has tailed off that much in recent years. There are great tracks on the most recent albums, albeit perhaps not as ground breaking or iconic.

I don’t really get the “Bono is a knob” thing either. Yeah he’s a bit preachy but tell me a frontman who isn’t? I certainly don’t want frontmen with no opinions who just nod politely at interviewers. Nothing endearing about that to me. I actually think his heart is in the right place even if he is flawed.

But I guess you didn’t start this thread wanting to read opinions like this. Music is so highly, vastly subjective and personal, I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s barely worth discussing at all.

Went off them at Live Aid when in my opinion Bono made an årse out of himself. Apparently the rest of the band were pretty pìssed off with him too.

Worst band in the history of the world - the only good songs are Elevation and I guess Beautiful Day ... everything else.... I just don't get it

Rattle and hum was up to the mark too IMHO.

I liked the early stuff unforgettable fire being my favourite album. Not keen on their later stuff. The stadium rock band I detest the most is cold play absolute garbage

And how come bono gets loads of flak when standing next to him is a bloke who wants people to call him "The Edge". I mean what the **** is all that about? Imagine one of your mates decides he wants to be known as "The Jazzman" or "Ace". You would rip the **** out of him. And yet here's a bloke called "the edge" and we're all supposed to accept that. **** off.
