Score yourself - how big a Boro fan would you say are you?

Me an a group of lads do a 300 mile round trip door to door for home games. Ive missed some myself through work, but probably go to as many away.
Its the craic and the banter - the rituals and the getting up at 7.15 on a Satda - the discussion on the way up and an impromptu conference on the game and a look at the team sheet.
I loved the Holgate and playing in winter under the floodlights.
Its part of whats made me and shaped my outlook on life and the enjoyment of temporal magic moments - especially following the Boro.
I wouldnt want it to be any different.[/QUO

that's where I think you're in a great place- that collective shared experience with a solid group of mates.
I quite miss all of that tbh

Only following your local team and not having a second team like Liverpool or united must given you a 10/10 😎👍
Paying to attend and buying strips is debatable, having to shout about how ‘passionate’ you are about football can get a bit pathetic .
football is more than just football when it’s your local team

What if Boro aren't your local team?

Used to be about an 8 I reckon. Since moving away from the area and having kids probably more like a 3 or a 4 now.

When my boys get older, if the brainwashing has been successful, hope to be something like an 8 again.

Probably a 7.5.

Have been going since 1986 when my Dad first took me (although I did lose interest during the early 90's when music and boozing were more appealing). Was at Hatlepool in 86 (although not the Tuesday night game as I had school the next day, so my Dad went alone).

Has a season ticket for the last 20 odd years, despite living the majority of that time in Manchester, Leeds, Hertfordshire and San Francisco, and so each home game takes a large chunk of my day. I'll make probably about 60-70% of games home and away (some away games are like home games to me) but where ever I am in the world I'll follow the game (whether it be by via TV, radio or Twitter).

Having said that losing doesn't impact my mood that much, as I've come to accept it as part and parcel of following a team.

Hard to tell, seeing as I'm local and I've never really had my dedication properly tested, but I'd say 7-8 right now.

I follow the club and club news obsessively, I go to every single home match, will plan events around football and the outcome of Boro matches will shape my mood all week.

I'm not really financially able to go to most away matches, so that's a check against me, but I've started to try and fit in at least one of the Yorkshire matches every season.

Another cross would be that I'm a latecomer to the game, and I wasn't really bothered about football during our golden era (though I'd still have said I was a Boro fan if asked). Something that's always going to rankle with me now that it's my passion.
6 years of proper supporting pales in comparison to almost every poster on this site.

Interesting question this.

I’m a 6 out of 10.

I’ve done 99% of home matches since 1973 (when living in Teesside) but done nowhere near enough away matches over the years to push up higher.

I think those who consistently travel away or long distances to home matches over a period of many years are the real ‘superfans’....and are probably either divorced or single.

First game 1958. Season ticket holder since 1973
10/10 from Stan Anderson to Jack. 10 away trips in 66-67promotion season. Highlight Doncaster away, races and match combined. Only time I've been to the races.
Marriage and kids got in the way but can't complain about that cos it's the best.
Most weekends still focused around 3pm on Saturday. Either going down the A 19 to the match or listening to an away game.
10/10 for parenting both my lads, born and raised in Tyneside are ardent Boro fans one is even a gold card holder.
If we do manage to get back into the ground near the end of the season the atmosphere is going to be amazing. Promotion run in and Wembley final

Back in the day a good 10 - went home and away in the 70’s and 80’s and was an ST holder for over 30 years.
Started to wind down about 15 years ago as my lads got older and moved away.
Now mainly go to away games in London with a few trips to the Riverside.

Every time they play I still get that feeling in the pit of my stomach. Mebe a 4/5 now?

I used to be a 10 but now probably a 6-8.

Never missed a game in the late 80's for about 4-5 years. Have lived all over the UK so regularly had 300-400 mile round trips for games. Contributed money to save the club in 1986.

Went a few years without a ST in the Strachan and Mowbray years, but had grown up and started a family by then. Have a ST now but my passion has waned a little. Other priories in life nowadays.

Morning Corco65, cracking question

I would class myself as a 4, maybe 5

My dad who was a massive, massive Boro fan, gold card holder, started taking me & my late younger brother, who was also a massive Boro fan, late 1971, he could never recall our 1st home league game though I know my 1st cup game was January 1972 at home to Man City we won 1-0, 1st away game 48 years today v Preston

Our house growing up was around Saturday afternoons & Tuesday evenings
Had a ST for about 35 years, which included getting the kids STs, when they wanted to go, they've since stopped having ST's but out of the two my daughter still enjoys going to games & with her old man too 😁

When my daughter was born, March 1993, I got her registered as a junior red within the hour, though my wife wasn't best pleased

Once going with my dad I didn't miss a home match till boxing day 1974, sickness & had to watch chitty, chitty, bang, bang, a film I've disliked to this day, then every home game to our home game v Norwich 1988, which included every game we played, friendlies, testimonials etc

Paid to save the Boro fund & still have my letter of acknowledgement & thank you from the club, the keeter is signed by most of the players from that era
Went to the Port Vale game at Pools
Been to around 82 different away grounds

Been to the highest attendances at AP & the lowest attendances at AP in my lifetime
Similar to the Riverside
Seen players who would be on the dole if they didn't play for the Boro to world class players

Dont go to as many as I once did, nothing to do with how we are playing just football in general, the Boro is & always will be a massive part of me & my family, but as I told my kids & tell people on here, once the Boro break your heart they have you for life

Got a bit of a collection of Boro memorabilia, & love anything nostalgia, stats etc, which is a passion of mine

One thing this lockdown has taught me, probably as well as others, how much we generally miss going to the Riverside

Also videoed AP been demolished & the Riverside getting built from storage tanks to the corners filled in

Everybody would give you 10 out of 10 for your support for the Boro Erimus.
But highest attendance?
27 Dec 1949 53802 v Newcastle
I don't think even the famous match v Oxford 1967 matched that.
Wasn't the lowest attendance against Norwich in86
Apart from Anglo Italian games

Cheers Windy, highest attendance in my lifetime, born in 1960, which I include the Man Utd, City Cup cup games & the high attendances under big Jack & John Neal

How far do you travel to watch Boro?
20 ish miles, live in Darlo, very rare to do away games last one probably 2017(?)

Any major events you have sacrificed to watch a match?

I don't think I've ever had to, so no. I have re-arranged things to fit around going to a game though)

Where you there during the really dark days in the 80's (not many did), did you donate to keep the club afloat?
In the 80s I was working most Saturdays and didn't get to many games at all. In 86 I was nearly as skint as the club but I think I threw a few quid in the buckets

Do you wear club colours when you go the match?
Usually I guess, in winter will always have a scarf on at least.

Have you watched Boro live at AP and the Riverside?
Yes, because I'm dead old

Did you see Boro lift their first major cup and play in Europe?
Yes, was there in Cardiff, did most of the UEFA home ties and went to Spain to watch us play Villarreal

Do you collect Boro merchandise and memorabilia?
No, not interested in it really

Have you encouraged others to support Boro?
Afflicted my son with the germs of Boro-itis, sorry first-born!

I guess my current level of devotion is about a 6 (watching most games on the live feeds this season, does that count for an extra 0.5?) my ST lapsed a few years ago due mostly to my father not feeling able to attend any more and needing more in terms of care.

Norwich in 85-86 was our fastest ever penalty scored, within one minute of kick off
Lowest attendance which I attended
v Carlisle FMC
v Brecia IAC
v Notts County, with Alf Duffield standing in the Holgate, we lost 1-0

Ah yes Notts County. I knew it was a 1-0 defeat. I was in the corner of the Bob end plenty of elbow room
