Gibson on “The Big Picture”

2 things...

1. We're boro. Or we were anyway? We bought Juninho, Ravanelli, Mendieta. We see a game against a big club, league or Cup and see an opportunity for a historic win. We wanted to gatecrash the top and create memories. We rock the boat. Or we did... I know we're not that club anymore, we're millionaires in a game of billionaires. That said, is it not the principle? Do we not care about the integrity of the game even a little bit? Are we really selling off something that is woven into the fabric of this nations psyche? The plucky underdog can always triumph and that triumph no matter how rare is worth 500 predicable titles, surely? Yet we're willing to sell off the propensity for football to come again and let these pigs rip the soul out of our game and put the final nail into the coffin of footballing romance and whatever whiff of fairness remains in its governance?

I adore Steven Gibson. He's funded memories that I hope I never lose and will almost certainly never experience again. That said, embarrassment, disgust and shame are what I feel right now.

It's not like the geordies with that cnut in charge who has no affinity with their club. It's Gibson man. It hurts to see him turn his back on football like this. He should be leading a charging pack on telling these lot that they're blooody well right football needs reform and we're glad they've finally acknowledged it but that no we won't be doing a deal with the devil to secure it. Not cosying up to these opportunists who will be one step closer to a breakaway league and franchises with this.

2. They knew this would cause outrage and all they're doing now is normalising the idea, getting people to back it and rationalise it on their behalf so that when they come back with a revised idea it'll be more easily accepted.

Looking at the table right now, might be ok..

7 Chelsea
8 Middlesbrough
9 Leeds United
10 Newcastle United
11 West Ham United
12 Southampton
13 Crystal Palace
14 Wolverhampton Wanderers
15 Manchester City
16 Brighton & Hove Albion
17 Manchester United
18 West Bromwich Albion

It’s all a bit bloody sad this innit, the whole of the EFL seem to be behind it. Rick bloody parry.

As for Steve gibson, oh to turn the clock back to 1994 when the greatest england captain for a generation became our manager and We were building a new ground.

Then remember the glorious moment when he was thrown in the air by the players at the millennium stadium in 2004.

Poor blokes guilty of nothing except being left behind.

Perhaps SG knows what it's like and takes to run a football club, he has put in millions upon millions of pounds into a club.

Perhaps SG see's the bigger picture, he knows how much a club means to its town or city and he knows the reality of being on the brink, self interest yes but perhaps he is also thinking of all the other clubs too, who in a very short time may no longer exist and in the absence of any real alternative perhaps he's right.

It reads a bit like he doesn't really like it, but with the way the game is at the moment it may be our only opportunity.

I understand the talk about our principles and how this might ruin the game further, and it probably will... but would you be willing to stick to your principles if it meant a small but significant number of clubs folded? Clubs not too dissimilar to Boro... What if it was us on the brink?

We chased the dream in the 90s and 00s, and what a time it was - but that is partly what left us in a terrible state and in the wilderness for a while. It took a while to recover and we were lucky that we had someone like Gibson who is willing to fund so much of the club. If we had done the same maybe a decade later, maybe we wouldn't have survived as the amount of money in the game rose significantly whilst we had none.

It's a tough call, a tough situation. I'm not comfortable with it, but maybe it's our only viable option :(

I am torn. I have been a big critic of Gibsons since he finally threw Karanka under the bus in January 2017. To be honest It was before even that, for his meddling in recruitment. Leaving all that aside I genuinely believed he had the clubs best interest at heart and his mistakes were with genuine honesty and the self interest of the club rather than himself.

Whilst we all speculate with no real insight, and pure guess work based on what we know, see and feel, I do think he has changed and become more introverted. His dream was our dream. He had the money and the focus to deliver something special and was rightly lauded for it. In 2006 he realised his model was not sustainable in the long term and the divergence began. Slowly but surely the division between hope and reality widened. Mr Gibsons personal life has changed. His influencers have therefore changed, his priorities have changed. We all go through the process of change in life too, it is normal. He is a businessman and money is a factor for him that affects his personal life, our affiliation with the club does not have that millstone other than the SC money.

That said, his support for the sell out seems short-termism. It feels dirty. He really needs to come out and tell us why, be honest, be open, something he seems to shy away from these days. I get the feeling he has lost his mojo. Whether it is his new life post divorce or just natural evolution or personal self interest or something else, I don’t know, but his silence on so many areas is widening the chasm between him and the clubs fans imho. I would far sooner hear the gritty truth, no matter how unpalatable, than be left to speculate and form assumptions. Only by debating the problems and understanding the issues will the people regain the trust of those responsible for administering our beloved clubs and the nations favourite sport. My glass is not even half empty anymore mind.

Would be well happy with that.

As for the proposals, what difference will it make? Agents will know how much each club gets and adjust their wage demands instantly.

You need to break the cycle of ever increasing wages and only a salary cap or the league taking a stand together will achieve that.

Coluka I agree with most of what you say but you issue a plea to him to “come out and tell us why”. Hasn’t he in effect done that? Don’t get me wrong I disagree with the whole idea as much as you do and this present plan will in all likelihood be rejected today by the emergency meeting of the PL. According to the Times apparently 14 clubs are definitely against.

That said is Gibson preparing for what may well happen before too long and that without restructure of the game we will see mass clubs folding. If the Government don’t step in to support these clubs we will have no say in what then happens.

I stopped reading after you said he threw Karanka under the bus in January. Absolute tosh.

“As for the proposals, what difference will it make? Agents will know how much each club gets and adjust their wage demands instantly.”

And that’s why Gibson wants a salary cap for this to work.

Ooooh get you humpty, is that cockney rhyming slang for numpty? He failed to back him with the players needed to stay up, I raise your ‘absolute tosh‘ with an extra pair of rose tinted blinkers for you should your existing pair wear out.

It isn’t. Followed up by the hatchet job on Orta (Gibson’s idea and gift) and all things Spanish in the Gazette and BBC Tees.

Aston Villa chairman has just come on the radio to say he will oppose Today but will expect the PL to come up with another plan to fund the lower leagues but obviously give Villa a bigger say.

Like I said I am torn, I feel for clubs lower down who will be teetering on the brink. This is huge for the game. If this deal goes ahead, then football, fans hopes and dreams will die a slow death unless you support a powerful Premier league team. The divergence and greed will increase as their power increases. Personally, a whole way of life for many British people is at stake. Clubs are a community asset, many local people rely on football for a living, the burger wagons, pubs, and other business ventures etc, not to mention the welfare side of things. It is much bigger than mere football. Once a power grab is made, rules and obligations become easier to change further down the line. Taking the 30 pieces of silver now is one thing, tomorrow though is another day. Power corrupts, self interest takes over. Will Liverpool or Man Utd care about Gillingham in 20 yrs time? I doubt it
