Patrick Roberts isn't happing......

Warnock said that Roberts is pretty much a no go. Just read an interview where he says he would need to sign 'two defensive fullbacks' to accommodate Patrick.

So basically saying he doesn't defend😂

Also thinks Tavs done ok in that position and we could have a 'real player' in Wing if he takes games by the scruff of the neck.. Suggesting he doesn't.

I guess he is one of the ones he wants to impress tonight.

It's a bit of a shame about Roberts. We clearly have made 2 forwards and maybe a CB priority.

As for Wing... If the player hasn't come out by now then I'm not sure it will. He's getting on in his career now.

He's not wrong though.

Roberts is a bit of a luxury player... And we can't afford luxury in our position. It has to be all hands on deck.

I understand what Warnock is saying but when the team fundamentally lacks creativity then personally I think it's worth sacrificing a bit of solidity in order to accomodate a player who can provide that spark to help us score more and potentially win more games.

I don't think Roberts is lazy just perhaps not strong enough in the tackle. I'd like to think we've got our eye on someone else who is creative but who can track back, tackle and put a shift in too.

Not overly fussed if we get him or not, I didn't think Roberts ripped up trees here and he'd probably be out injured for double figures games anyway.

Would sooner have him on the bench than nobody, but I wouldn't want to be forking out a large fee for him.

I'd say he had no defensive element to his game.

We can't afford to have that. Very few teams can.

And if we're honest, whilst he was exciting to watch at times he didn't really offer a lot of end product.

He'll end up in Scotland.

Like Harrison was under Pullis
A luxury player is a good player
Saville McNair and Howson are very similar, surely we have room for someone like Roberts

If you'd said Ramirez I'd have been more inclined to agree with you...

Harrison and Roberts don't even come close

If he plays on the right you could play Dijksteel or Howson at fullback. And we definitely need a left back regardless in my opinion (although none linked and not mentioned by Warnock so maybe we won't be getting one).

Can also play as a 10.

It's Warnock's team and he knows what he wants. He might also just think Roberts isn't good enough, which is fair enough. The worry is he seems to be making the same mistake Monk and Pulls did by thinking the goalscoring issue is purely down to the strikers while we still have a dearth of creativity in midfield.

We need forwards because we only have 2. But in terms of the starting 11 we need a genuinely creative midfielder more. As we have done for years.

Patrick Roberts was just finding his feet with us and he was putting in great deliveries as well as scoring a few - I really hope we can accommodate him.
Fletcher especially was benefiting from him.

I agree that people are having false memories about Roberts (even though he played fairly recently). He looked no better than that player we got from Brum who dived all the time, can't even remember his name*.
The mindset people have about 11-man defence nowadays is depressing, though.

* ed - Diego Fabbrini. Loaned from Watford to several clubs.

☝️ 100% this.

How often do you hear of teams trying to stop a team playing and scoring and they say cut out the supply and you stop 'x' scoring or mark 'y' and it nullifies their goal threat. With us the opposition probably say let them have the ball and if we sit in they will rarely hurt us and won't have enough to break us down.

Quite worrying reading that. Of course we need another creative player and a left full back. He says he can’t rely on Wing yet well don’t then. Sign a genuinely creative player like Roberts or someone else. Not happy if we persist with only having this 1 formation to use all season as Spence isn’t consistent enough and we will become easy to play against, teams will work us out if we don’t have any variation in our selections. Worrying read that was.

I think the lack of money will mean we suffer exactly what you fear... We're going to be very reliant on loan deals late in the window I think.

But who would you go for...? 🤔

Surely Newcastle or Leeds have a couple that would come... We wouldn't have the issue of getting them to relocate etc.

I would go for big Keenan Davis on loan from Villa as a big powerful striker and also wouldn’t mind Atsu on loan from Newcastle as an alternate to Roberts if we couldn’t get him. Left backs I am sure there is loads around at our level who are solid enough that we could prize away from a championship club for a relatively Low fee. If it means that we need to sell a McNair or someone like that then so be it. It would be worth it in my opinion so we have a more fulfilled squad.

I think the reality is Warnock is trying to balance the style of play with the players we have and the lack of affordability to change how we play fundamentally. (Doesn’t everyone I hear your cry). He is basically being pragmatic In terms that creative players and forwards cost the big money and he has had to choose. He feels with Roberts (or any similar type) we need defensive full backs too. I agree and I am one of the biggest critics on the board banging on about the lack of ball carriers, pace and creativity.

He is right and the money is clearly not there to sort it effectively. The squad is ridiculously imbalanced, needing really significant change and we can thank Monk, Pulis as well as the recruitment team for doing it and Gibson himself for sanctioning it. It is like they have never heard of forward planning.

I think if we are not careful, it will get worse. As things stand we lose our only 2 strikers next summer and the year after a potential whole centre midfield (Saville, McNair and Wing). To let these situatIon arise in sectional chunks isn’t clever and leaves us wide open when the finances are low imho.

The thing about Wing is he probably won't get 'better'. He could get a bit more situational nounce. He's at an age and football upbringing that he's gonna miss a few things in terms of development.

That said Vardy was 24-25 before he got fully going (I'm not saying he's a Vardy😂)

You here from everyone in and around training that Wing is the best finisher at the club. Also despite a poor season in a **** poor side he scored 7 goals. That's prollific compered to Howson / Tav and Saville.

I'm not writing him off. I think he's probably been thrown down the gauntlet by Warnock and is running out of chances. He was clearly one of the ones asked to impress tonight (probably Coulson as well).

Warnock said the squad is unbalanced and lacks leaders. Its still the same unbalanced side he had 2 months ago. I'm not sure why people think we will get better over night. It's still Monks / Pulis and Woodys side.

I guess the Keeper / Hall and Morsy are addressing the leadership issue as 2 ex club skippers.
