Everyone has an opinion on where the club have fallen short, what we need to do to progress, who should stay and who should go.
So, put yourself in Scott's position for this summer - who do you target to take us from playoff contenders to automatic promotion candidates and who do you try to flog?
My first order of business would be to send Greenwood, Thomas and O'Brien back to their parent clubs. Even if we're only paying half of their wages that'd be around £30k p/w saved.
Offer Ayling a 1 year contract (£15k p/w).
Allow McNair to leave, not because he's not good but because with Clarke, Lenihan, Fry, VDB as centre backs we are well stocked there and we can use the reported £20k p/w to strengthen other areas of need.
Look to bring in a fee for Dijksteel - he seems to have dropped off a bit this season which is a shame as he was brilliant under Wilder. Carrick doesn't seem to fancy him so makes sense to cash in as he'll be going into the last year of his contract. Current market value of £1.5m but I wouldn't expect to get anywhere near that.
Take whatever we can get for Hoppe. He doesn't look up to the task, get rid and save the £10k p/w wages.
Release Jamie Jones and bring Sol Brynn into the 1st team set up.
Then I'd offer Howson another year extension on same money (believed to be £25k per week). Offer new contracts to Jones, McGree and Clarke who will be going into their final 12 months. Offer a new contract to Rav Van den Berg on improved terms (online sources have him as only being on £2k per week which surely can't be true!)
Try to bring in Will Vaulks from Sheff Wed whose contract expires this summer to be the 4th centre midfielder. 6 foot tall, in the top 6% for defensive actions for defensive midfielders in the division this season. 30 years old so not young, 3 year contract at £15k p/w.
Offer somewhere in the region of £2.5m for Sirike Dembele from Birmingham to be the skillful ball-carrier on the left or just behind the striker. Top 3 for successful dribbles in the championship. Goal involvement stats aren't brilliant but he's playing in a poor team. 27 years old so another 3 year contract at his current salary, again £15k p/w.
Sign Jamal Lowe from Bournemouth (on loan at Swansea) on a free transfer, wages around £12k p/w. 11 goal involvements this season and a decent shot/goal conversion rate. Similar style to Latte Lath so would take us up to 4 strikers with LL, Coburn and Forss.
Bring in Sorba Thomas, top of chances created in the championship this season in a terrible Huddersfield side. Will take a few million in transfer fee but currently only earning around £5k per week so even doubling his money won't put too much strain on the wage bill. 24 years old so in his prime for a quick, wide-player. 4 year contract.
8 out, 6 in (including Ayling in both the out and in, and Brynn counting as coming in). Leaves the squad with 2 less but better balance and also leaves room for young players to be part of the squad and push on. Wage bill would be around the same as this season.
Transfer fees spent = approx £6.5m
Transfer fees received = approx £1m
Net spend = £5.5m
