McAuley Langstaff.

I think they need to develop a thicker skin if that hurt them.
It didn't hurt but it made me question Gibson and wonder if he's either a bit thick or just a bad businessman. It was such a stupid thing to say and if he had any statistics on his customer base he would have known how incorrect it was. To this day I still can't work out what he was aiming to achieve.

Made all the more ludicrous given the club was largely based on Norton green at the time at the ICI hotel.

I’d be interested to see the stats from the time, maybe he was trying to get a reaction out of boro fans who weren’t attending at the time, who knows. I don’t see why people would be hurt by it though, it isn’t a big deal really.

So if he said an entire area is not worth bothering with as it supports the biggest rival isn’t a big deal

Did he say Stockton wasn’t worth bothering with? I don’t think he did but I’d have to listen again.

I think the fact people use this as something to throw at Gibson along with ‘smashing the league’ is pretty pathetic really, he’s the clubs biggest fan and constantly shows this and we have all said dafter things on this message board haven’t we.

That was the whole point of his comment as in why should we bother it’s unbelievably dismissive of his core support as I know a lot of boro fans just in Norton.

Look at this board.

No it’s not used throw anything he said it snd it was deeply flawed thing to do.

Not sure your point.
He’s constantly reminded of it especially when things are going the clubs way on the pitch the last 4-5 years.

I am sure he regrets saying it and I’m sure he regrets hurting any boro fan’s feelings over it but if people want to keep bringing up quotes from years ago then I'm afraid they need to get over it.

“the majority of Stockton people support Sunderland” were his words.

What people on this message board say is irrelevant. We can say as many daft things as we want, we're not running a business that relies on these people paying the way.

I've been very critical of Gibson over the years on his ability to increase our fanbase. He's far too parochial and even being in the PL for all those years with superstar players in a rapidly growing market he did nothing to increase our fanbase. That has cost us a fortune over the years because there is a global audience that want to watch football, want to spend money, want to stream/listen/attend/buy merchandise etc that are swelling the coffers of other clubs and Gibson has failed to capture any of that market. It's no surprise when the largest town, right next door, is seen as a far-off land that supports another club.

Sorry mate I don’t agree with any of that.

You’re guessing at a lot of that, what makes him parochial? Do you think it’s his way or the highway?

Our fanbase dipped very harshly after the season we finished 7th but we’ve never had the biggest fan base anyway, we aren’t the most popular club. I remember playing in front of 10,000 for European games.

Gibson has shown time and again that he supports us and the club, people are so critical of him without any knowledge whatsoever, look at our finances for instance, how many ridiculed the man over the club debt to Gibson O’Neill, then what did he do?

I love gibbo but he’s incredibly parochial he’s changing but he still very insular. Never mind Manila you can’t even buy our top in Hill street centre let alone Havana.

Look at the woody appointment.

What about the woody appointment? Are you talking about as manager?

The fact we only sell our merchandise in the club shop makes Gibson parochial?

Back to the OP for those that have seen a lot of him do they think he could “do a vardy” in that he could take his game to the next level in a higher league.
