Dan Barlaser

Not sure about the quaterback analogy, as he tends more to operate as the hub of the wheel, playing shorter stuff so we retain possession until a gap opens up. He's particularly good at playing those incisive 15 to 20m passes that cut through the midfield and set up an attack (ie the ones that sent Silvera away v Preston). Carrick was a bit more quaterback like, in as much as he routinely played accurate long balls over the top.
Oh, I dont know I'd say he's got a good range of passing, not just the short stuff - in relation to Carrick we play a slightly slower possession based system rather than what he was used to at Man U. But get your point.

Hubby wheel quarterback deep lying midfielder. But not a destroyer. Definitely not that one.......😉

Well exactly. That is supposed to be Howson's role. I keep seeing things written on here like "he didn't impose himself on the game" ... which is, to me, mis-understanding the key role he plays, which is much more about the functioning of the team...linking the back four with the more offensive minded midfielders. He's not always going to be at his best ... no-ne is. But the reason I get so forthright on threads like this is because it's not really fair to malign a player who is clearly doing what the manager asks ... especially when there's poor understanding of that role.

You in on carricks team talks like?

As for the phrase "he does not impose himself enough"

This was in relation to his work out of possession not in possession. I doubt very much Carrick instructs him to stand 3 yards off players and not pressure the ball and stand flat footed while attacking players run straight past him.

If he's doing exactly as the manager asks to the quality you suggest he'll have made himself undroppable..

They'll rotate when available more than likely. Though Hackney and O'Brien will tend to play further forward and not fulfill the same function. In the short time that I got to see O'brien, he looked very good out wide... great crosses. Might be wrong, as not seen enough of him, but he may be played more in the Greenwood/Silvera position. He did look very good though.

Hackney will play every game when available. Howson, Barlaser and O'Brien are competing for the other place.

Barlaser and Howson both playing really well as has Engel.

If we had a stronger front 4 out I think we'd have got 2 or 3

They put two men up high from goal kick to press Barlaser from the first goalkick of the half. Different from the first half. Dan not going to get the same time in our own half as he had first half.

Frustrating thing is he'll have a game like this and then follow it up with about three absolute stinkers, seems like he just can't play like this consistently.

100% agree with this.

If he could play like this even 60-80% of the time you could live with the defensive frailties. He's been so good on the ball. But it's more like 10-20% of the time.
