The Sending Off

Definitely changed the game, but I'm struggling to have any sympathy whatsoever with the lad who was sent off.

Booked for a potentially nasty tackle (wasn't a red, yellow was right colour) but then gobbed off to the ref......and must have been something pretty bad for the ref to give him a yellow immediately.

Players, managers have all been warned that dissent towards the ref is an automatic yellow so all the ref has done is - correctly applied the laws of the game. What was he supposed to do? Mackems are moaning that the ref was bent, should have had a word with him, given a warning.......🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️

Their meltdown on RTG towards the ref is comical, hundreds absolutely fuming and only one or two actually making the correct observation that the player put the ref in the situation where he had to give him a yellow.

Funny not one mentioned the two handed push in the box by O'Nein on Crooks ........odd that, bent ref eh?

Why is losing one defender such a crucial issue though as when we lost fry we didn’t crumble but the diff was they also got a pen for it as well and so that killed us

but it was 0-0 when he went off.

Should have been off for the first. If that went to VAR I expect he would be. It was endangering an opponent and was pure luck rather than judgement that he didn’t connect with Coburn’s planted standing leg. If he had he could have broke it.

He got away with one but didn’t recognise that fortune and proceeded to give the ref a mouthful. Silly boy. He will learn.

Just posted the same. (Apologies...didnt see your post).
He definitely said something to the ref after the first yellow card.

The fact his foot up went between the players legs and so the boot did not contact was irrelevant, he endangered an opponent. If a Boro player had done that, I’d be expecting a red. I thought he gave Neil the benefit of the doubt and arguably showed empathy to Neil. It is a shame Neil didn’t show the ref the same respect. The push on Crooks was a blatant foul and again the ref showed more than a bit of empathy toward them.

Their fans are going on about Josh elbowing Ballard, who btw comes across as a bit of a tvvat, has anyone seen this or got a clip of it to see what happened, I can’t see Josh doing it deliberately, Ballard ŵas trying to stoke up josh to even up the reds imho.

Went to watch Stockport v Doncaster yesterday.

Second half, Doncaster player fouled County's Paddy Madden, clear free kick. Ref didn't give it, Madden jumped up, gobbed off at ref, yellow card.

About 10 mins later, he was fouled on the edge of the box, again ref didn't give it. Just got up and played on. Professional enough to keep his gob shut.

Sunderland lad - already on a booking, mouthing off at ref - didn't end well did it? Silly boy.

Blame the player, not the ref. Mogga should have absolutely bollocked him after the game, but by his reaction bet he gave him a big cuddle 🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️

Mowbray was talking to an audience as most managers do. He was bordering on the edge of getting a fine at one point i thought. I suspect he will fine Neil with it being dissent. He will await the refs report to see what he said rather than just accepting the players word I’d guess.

If they stop to think about it without emotions there can be no complaints. Players should not give refs any abuse. There is too much of it in football and it’s about time it was dealt with like yesterday.

Talk of empathy has nothing to do with the refs decision. If their players shouted abuse he gets a booking. The player should have known better.

The more empathy (lenience) a ref shows, the more players try to push boundaries, Sunderland got away with some big calls in the first half and I suspect Neil thought the ref would be a softer touch than he was.
I put it down to being fired up, local derby (😉) and losing his head. He's young, he needs to learn from it. Didn't think, reacted .......badly

I back the refs 100% in dissent cases, no excuses.

They are lucky they came out of that game with only one red and O'Nien certainly could have had one for his antics in the box with Fry when he was wrestling with him on the corner, he then he's got two hands pulling Coburn before shoving him over in the box after Greenwood's effort is saved by Patterson. Whilst Latt is trying to join in play with Jonesy's goal, O'Nien pulls his shirt and trips him to the ground, Latt falls but it also hinders O'Nien from getting back to cover.

Calrk got one yellow and could have easily picked up a second for his lunge at Jones when he went past him for Crooks goal. Jones has to hurdle him to avoid being wiped out.

I agree with Sunderland fans that Clarke should have been given more protection from the referee and he could have booked Smith and another Boro player for trying to bring him down in the same move. Sunderland kept the ball in play at the time and had us under pressure for around 5 minutes. The ref should have revisited the incident and booked both Boro players.

That's what I think as well. To give him a yellow knowing it would mean a red, it can't just have been a simple "that should have been a free kick ref!"...

I wonder what it was he actually said?

Would have preferred to have beaten them with 11v11 but I don't think they can complain too much, yeah we aren't used to that happening but the players know it's a possibility so why be so stupid? To be fair to them I have noticed a lot of Sunderland fans calling Neil an idiot so they're not all deranged.

Should have been off for the first tackle anyway, Coburn was lucky there.

Agree. In fairness, I think Greenwood who was on a yellow got away with one early in the second half too though it should be said, could have easily got a second yellow.
