What would you class as a successful season under Warnock?

He is starting from a very poor base. It all depends on recruitment for me. I see the press are talking about four or five signings through the spine. Personally I think we should be looking at double that, including width and pace, to do that we will need to sell the likes of Britt, Paddy and George (Saville) If we rake in around £12M-£15M then I think its doable, we will need 2 or 3 decent loans mind. If the club get the recruitment right for a change, signing players with pace, experience and at the back, strong, dogged defenders then a top 6 finish is achievable. The easy bit is identifying targets, the hardest job will fall on Gibson and Bausor to sign them midst a pandemic with money being tight all round.

I would be happy with a top half finish, flirting with the play offs would be nice, but best not be too greedy until we have seen the standard of recruitment, anything else above that would be amazing. It really does depend on the hierarchy delivering on Warnock’s wish list though, there is much rebuilding needed.

Good post. Gonna be an interesting re build. I’m excited but nervous to see how we do. Hope the reports yesterday about Warnock being in control of transfers are indeed correct.

Following a really poor season with Leeds virtually being the only good side in the Champs and with Bournemouth and Watford added , I would expect Warnock to be close to taking Boro up if we have a successful transfer period. Best of luck NW. 🤞

We were willing to survive last season under JW and write it off as a project and change of style. Under NW, I would say play offs are more than achievable - all depends on who he brings in. Certainly the existing squad look to be rejuvinated (Assambalonga, Johnson, Tavernier, Spence)

Looking at the teams coming down and the teams that have gone up, I must say, next season is a great opportunity to get inside that top 6.

Bournemouth/Norwich/Watford don't scare me.

Norwich are a mess
Bournemouth and Watford will have mass sales to reduce their potential debt.

There's no one in this league I think can 'run away with it' next season.

I think it could be very close.

No reason with the right man in charge - Warnock - and a few shrewd signings in the window, we can't push for top 6.

Our away form under Warnock has been incredible and hopefully he manages to sort our home form out to give us the platform to push on.
Have a suspicion Eddie Howe will be off as well .

Staying around mid table with no threat of relegation and the odd flirt with playoffs (hopefully sneak in).

If Millwall can just miss out then no reason we can't. Millwall finished last season with 44 points and did nothing really other than change manager and little or no investment.

Also the big one for me is add goals. We have to realistically score another 20+ to challange. The last 3 Boro managers have failed with different styles but pretty much same players. Think that says it's the players more than style? 🤔

I don't think it's gonna be 'pretty'. Warnock has a style but I'm still confident it's more offensive than pulis ball. He likes to get it forward quickly and does like players with a bit of skill mixed in with power/physically.

I think Cardiff is very much the style and look he will go for. If that's not your thing then get ready to be disappointed.

Thats a bold statement given how the squad stands atm. I agree with ticker_tape that one season is nowt nor summat. So he is staying a year then off, is his backroom staff going to be out of a job in 12 months as is usual case with management changes. He is going to come in change things around followed by someone else changing things around no doubt. Another mistake by Gibson I'm afraid. There will be a lot of squad changes this year and would have preferred him to bring ins someone for a longer period that can bring some stability to the club. I would even have gone with bringing someone in to work with Warnock with the idea that they seamlessly take over. Don't particularly fancy Blackwell in that roll though.

One other thing I worry about is that he will bring in a lot of old heads who will be past their sell by date after he has gone and will create more issues down the line.

Squad should be strong enough with a few decent additions, I still believe this squad has alot of quality but have been let down by the last 3 managerial appointments. As someone mentioned we were only 6 wins away from the playoffs this season, if you look at our results they can easily be made up, league will be far weaker next season too.

Agree with the rest of that though and thats why Im not overly convinced about Warnock, if we go back to signing 30+ players again we will just end up back in the same position in a few years time, looking at Warnocks previous clubs it does seem like something he will do as well. Wouldnt surprise me if all the grand plans of completely changing our recruitment strategy from last summer are scrapped already which is worrying for everyone, especially when in 2022 we will likely have a managerial team of Kevin Blackwell and George Friend.....

If you can’t be overly convinced about a manager with Warnocks experience, guile and unbelievable record then who can we be convinced by? He’s a born football manager. He gets results, there is nothing wrong with the appointment.

I think if Gibson backs Warnock - as much in autonomy as budget - then Warnock will do what Warnock does.
An overhaul of the squad, canny recruitment to fit the way he wants to play, building of consistency and a great team ethic; resulting in a promotion charge that gathers momentum.

He has one window to get us moving forward and then another to add a turbo boost.

Wise signings and good loans mean we need to trust Warnock's recruitment not that which has failed us spectacularly for the past few years.

I'm hopeful of that play off push - actually optimistic.

If Warnock just overhauls the squad and we finish top half then he will have done well in a first year. He will deserve our thanks and praise for that. I think he will do a lot more - if backed.

Monk was devastating - we still have Assombolonga, Fletcher, Johnson to get rid of.
pulis left us worse off - we still have Saville and McNair - having spent a massive wage bill on short term tat.

Warnock will be the manager that actually improves us again.
The next appointment after that will be extremely important, but lets enjoy Warnock and improvement for now.

Top 10.

I'd not be shocked if he managed the play-offs, but I'd also not be banking on it happening.
He just needs to get us competitive and solid again, we'll go from there.

Building a team for the future and setting down clear foundations - but just how do you get someone else to inherit that work and take it forward?
Just say in a year's time Neil Warnock says yes I would like to retire - how do you find another manager that would be prepared to step in take on the job and run it to the same plan? How would the fans take to us promoting a coach from the ranks again - as surely anyone coming in from outside is going to want to put their own plan in place.

You could say that about any management appointment though, a lot of the time we have given managers 3 years contracts and got rid of them half way through it or in Woodgates and Monks case even earlier. This is the right thing to do, get an experienced guy in to build a good squad spending within our means and if we do have to have a new guy next season he will becoming into hopefully a good side and hopefully can build on top of Warnocks work. I wouldn’t rule out Warnock being here 2 years yet anyway if he does well and enjoys it

Agree with this and as much as I am pleased NW will be with us next season - it isn't really a long term solution. That is why (on another thread) I was suggesting a Nigel Pearson type appointment would make sense.

Unrealistic demands of playoffs settling in early from the fans

Won’t be long before the Warnock out threads are started based on this expectations

No demands from me, but certainly a target. I would be happy with a top half finish but surely the target is play offs. That’s the reason Warnock is here that’s for sure

They aren't demands, The qurestion was what would make a successful season. People aren't saying they wouldn't accept less

The job he did saving us last season should n out be underestimated. We were awful and sleepwalking into League One. We managed to prevent a Sunderland level drop out. There is always a danger of failing to remember where we currently are in the Championship meta. There are ~15 teams better than us. So there is a big task to do in such a short time.

If fans begin to romanticise and set unreasonable expectations we will be severely disappointed. Mid-table will be a big achievement and Warnock will have secured the financial future of the club. Expectations should be set off the pitch as well as on it. Play-offs would be nothing short of a miracle.

For those bemoaning a 1 year contract - this next year will be the most important since coming back down. Anything that Warnock can do to settle the ship, create a foundation to progress in the division will be a job well done. At 71 a year is all we can reasonably expect him to commit to but he is the best person for the job.

Let’s see who he brings in. If we finish 10th next season I will be happy. Up the Boro!

If he is given most of the wages of the players who have left in the Summer and players who have taken reduced contracts and is allowed to use any proceeds from sales I would say Promotion is the objective and would be disappointed to finish outside the top 6.

Woodgate was forced to sell and given hardly any of the money raised which was unfair (£15m raised £4.5m spent). If Steve Gibson did not trust with his money he should not have appointed him.
