Looks like we couldn't afford Giles??

5mil is a massive outlay for a champo club to spend on a LB. You won't see any others doing that (none parachute payment clubs).

It's also not just the 5mil. It's the 3-4 year deal that comes with it. I'd imagine he's on a minimum of 20k a week. I'd expect even more.

Yes it's laughable that we once spent more on the likes of Flint / Saville and Fletcher. To think those 3 alone cost 21mil and big wages. Yet fortunately we've moved away from those 'pay anything' days.

It's a shame. Yet no point breaking the finance structure. Gibson isn't made of money. He's losing a fortune as it is.

Think of the money we’ve wasted over the years which dwarf the value of this deal, also what has happened to the money we were offering for strand Larsen last season.
I seriously doubt we were ever near the money reported on JSL. We will have used a fair chunk on Archer Steffen and Ramsey I’d guess, Giles was relatively cheap as was Mowatt, Muniz was poor value and probs cost a fair bit too. The cost of those loans may well have been a fair few £M

And if you consider our business model giving 25% sell on and bonus’s really reduces the value in the deal…and it’s all about value now

We are outside the premier league so difficult to compete with teams in the league,we make a loss, we have to comply with FFP and I think the club think ( and if they do I agree ) that there a bigger problems to solve than the absence of Giles.

Clearly Giles ‘unfollowing’ us last week was the point negotiations with Wolves came to an end and Luton’s bid became too rich for us.

We can’t on one hand want a brave new structure then on the other want us to break our framework straight away
That’s fair.

As the cost of the deal went up, the value went down, so I guess it’s the right choice to drop at that stage. I think for a Cf we would pay 4, 5 or 6m, because goalscorer are a premium and a good one could be sold for 15-20m so significant profits. But you aren’t going to sell a LB from the champ for that.

Some folks were on about £10m ffs

£5m is too much for a championship left back.. who can’t defend, provided 3 assists in 2022 (none in the playoffs) and who’s mistake cost is a place in the play off final.

Wilder’s signing.. best of luck to Giles and Luton.. here’s to OUR left back for this season.

I suspect it came down to us needing a more structured payment plan rather than us not being able to afford £5M. Luton, flush with money, were able to pay more upfront. Sounds like we're trying to get a balance between signing a LB and having money for a striker.
