Have the police lost our trust?

Have a look at the video, a woman who supposedly evaded the bus fare is man handled in broad daylight in front of her child.

Is this a race issue?

I for one have had enough of the MET.

Metropolitan Police said in a statement:

'We are aware of a video circulating showing a female being handcuffed by police.

'Officers from the Roads and Transport Policing Command were conducting a joint revenue protection operation with Transport for London inspectors in Whitehorse Road, Croydon, on Friday July 21.

'One woman left the bus after not complying with a revenue inspector's request to check that she has paid her fare. When asked to stop by police she attempted to walk off and became abusive. As a result she was arrested on suspicion of fare evasion and detained.

'When it was later established that the woman had paid she was de-arrested and allowed to go on her way.

'The woman was with her child and we appreciate that the video and circumstances look concerning. However, it is a snapshot of a wider incident. The video from this incident and the officers body worn video, which was active for a longer period than the social media clip, has been reviewed’.

The question I would ask you all is who would you call if your house was broken into or your car stolen, if you or a family member were badly assaulted and we would all come up with the same answer.

There’s always been bad apples in the police it is just easier to highlight them now. The recruitment process needs to be more stringent and ongoing training needs to continue throughout an officer’s service.

If I am right, we have one or two police officers on this board and a couple of others that have moved on to other things.

Please don’t tar all of them with the same brush.

Beat me to it Norm.

it is a self fulfilling prophecy, one person says they don’t trust the police, hundreds read it and some will then take those seeds on board sadly. Social media is full of untruths and wrong perceptions that masquerade as truth. There are bad apples everywhere in every large organisation, there will be some people on here who have done things they shouldn’t have in the past, we all have skeletons of varying degrees. The police is a cross section of society and at times some will fall short of the standards set.

I, as a white middle class male, would call the police, as I'd need the crime reference number. If I were a person of colour or female then I may think twice about even that.....

Well personally if I met two people and I didn’t know anything about either of them, other than one was a cop and one wasn’t.

I’d be far more inclined to trust the cop simply because I’d know that they have been professionally vetted (and would continue to be professionally vetted).

Professional vetting that allowed "the rapist" and "Dave the b****d" to continue to work as a copper whilst carrying out years of abuse ?

This is the exact type of response that spreads the wrong message and casts doubt and false understanding of reality. It is not the organisation that is bad it is the odd individual within it.

it's the law to report a crime isn't it. I have faith that it would be a pointless exercise in excessively complicated administration.
Anyway, that policeman was young, had tattoos, short sleeves and facial hair. He's not helped himself ;)

Actually no, the law does not obligate you to report a crime

I agree that it is a small percentage of police who are 'bad' per se, but the issue with this is that they need to be held to a higher standard than the general public, as they enforce the laws. People seem to miss the point when they talk about 'one bad apple' and don't finish the metaphor.

There's also the fact that the police leadership have shown themselves to obfuscate and downright lie when subject to scrutiny - like in the cases I outlined above. That's not the fault of individual coppers, but it does undermine trust in the institution.

My daughter slipped over on a night out on Saturday, dislocated her knee cap, excruciating pain. Bundled into a taxi and taken to A&E. Bit of a distance from taxi drop off to A&E (up a ramp) so she was a bit bolloxed.

Young copper saw them struggling, went into A&E to get a wheelchair, got her into it, pushed her to reception.

🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️

There’s no front page story in that and people are only happy with bad news.

Hope she recovers soon. 👍
