Why no Barlaser...

Not overly committing to this, but as an idle thought on how to accommodate a midfield scrapper we've already seen Hackney can operate as one of the three and I could see Barlaser having some of the assets to become a 10 (albeit deeper) if we lose Chuba.

Maybe, could be talking nonsense here, but there's plenty of tweaking could be done with the squad we've got.

But if we have a Boateng type then you essentially rely more on Akpom to be a midfielder. We aren't allowed to field 12.

The reason we were scoring so many was because we didn't have a Boateng we had hackney and Howson together getting stuck in as best they could defensively (creating a semi Boateng between them) and thus unlocking us creatively.

Mowatt didn't have that in his locker, Barlaser does and his time at Rotherham showed that. To me it's the first sign that when the pressure was put on Michaels decision making he actually has gone against his own philosophy. Honestly I'll be keeping an eye on this next season, it was very similar with Aitor.
Defensive player is maybe wrong its driving a game but being much better when we lose the ball. Hackney has potential to do it all with the right coaching he has all the natural attributes. Its a rare commodity to get someone who can do both sides of the game equally well with the ball and without it souness was the best in the game, leadbitter was superb at championship level at it as well.

Souness and Grant both had goals in them too. Both were harder and nastier the Hackney, and that's no disrespect to him.

Hopefully my friend.

I don't want to pee on anyone's chips, it's just really annoyed me and no one on here has called it out.

I love Carrick the person, the human being but I would say these things to him in person if given the opportunity, I'd like to hear his rational.

I want us to succeed but I was left bitter with the Coventry games.

Not sure why Boateng features in this thread. He was a superb midfielder, an absolute warrior playing at the highest level. Anyway, Barlaser has some nice passing but for me to date, lacks the energy and athleticism to really influence the game.

Fair point re Boateng.

But on barlaser where has your evidence come from to make those assertions? He's not had a run in the team. The entire point of the thread.

The game has moved away from hard tackling midfield destroyers. Too many yellow cards for those players now. You need athletes. Stamina machines that can eat up ground, hound opponents and then make a pass to a teammate. I hope Barlaser could become that kind of player too as he already seems to have the ability to find a pass and great with dead ball

We had a ball winning nasty midfielder he was sold under Neil Warnock s feet when he was trying to build a side....
MORSY
He will be back at The Riverside next season....

100% I think the Boateng argument was a bit of a strawman to somehow link Barlaser not getting game time due to needing a physical player in midfield, whilst forgetting the player that actually got game time was Mowatt.

I take it back to Why?! I honestly can't wrap my head around it.

without taking a shot at Mowatt
And yet you've criticised him on 6 different posts on this thread
Mowatt has now gone, but Carrick - the manager who got us from near relegation to the play offs - preferred him to Barlaser

And Mowatt didn't single-handedly cost us promotion - it was a team effort that collectively wasn't good enough

Onwards and hopefully upwards - I hope Barlaser becomes a better player, and earns the right to 'have a run' in the side

Be interesting to see who Carrick plays and signs in the summer anyway

No he didn't your right, but results cratered after he came in. So yes I guess I'm having a pop at him.

Question... What did he do wrong to not earn a run in the side?

I don't think Barlaser has particularly seized his chances over the few months he was here
As I said Carrick didn't pick him - and he's the manager who got us from around 22nd up to 4th - so I think we can say he did a good job
Nobody would be happier than me to see Barlaser succeed, but I don't think he's quite done it yet here. I'm hoping that comes with a full pre-season under Carrick

What chances?

Look at his stats, he started 2 games both when we essentially played 'B teams'. Outside of that he's had an average of approximately 15 minutes when coming off the bench.

In Michael Carrick we trust.

We badly missed Howson, that is the clear thing.
Mowatt did ok when he came in and it is unfair in my opinion to single him out after the play off failure.
For Barlaser it's early days, he hasn't set things on fire, has shown some nice passing, but has a long way to go to tie down a first team place for me.

Nakamba at Luton is the type of player I would love us to sign. Absolutely everywhere, wins the ball, has physical presence, so mobile and simple decent passer too.
He's not called Marvellous for nothing.
Sadly I don't think we can get him if Luton go up. If they don't, then he'd be a great loan from Villa, especially if we can't get Archer and/or Ramsey back.

Fair point, my observation is simply based on what I’ve seen so far. I suppose given he cost less than £1m I was never expecting a world beater. Fingers crossed with a good pre season he pushes on 👍🏼

Wasn't he £1 million due to his contract expiring in 6 months.

The whole story throughout January was that we'd captured an absolute bargain and Rotherham fans were in tears because he is that good when given a chance.
