League one is a sink

Managers very rarely do, I remember Southgate saying 'i'm no quitter, what message does thats end to my kids, but managers always think the next game will save them
Its that, but its also because managers are on big (and often long) contracts now and know that if it gets bad enough they'll get the sack and compensated anyway. They can live in hope, but they can also comfortably conclude that sitting pretty until someone takes it out of their hands is financially beneficial to them. In their view, its not their choice. Its easy to see why they take that approach.

Hard to blame just one person IMO.

Woodgate definitely deserves some of the blame though.

Gibson deserves some blame too for picking and sticking with Woodgate as manager.

Pulis is also responsible for assembling the most unbalanced squad I think I've ever seen.

Gibson for letting Pulis do the above.

If we go down, then the blame is made up of a collection of huge errors.

There's been a catalogue of errors made by the Chairman since we got promoted to the Premier League;

  • Sacking Karanka and not giving him the chance to take us straight back up
  • Appointing Agnew as head coach until the end of the season
  • Appointing Monk, who had not actually achieved anything of note and giving him £50m to spend
  • I'm not going to criticise his decision to appoint Pulis because I thought it would prove to be a masterstroke at the time, but Gibson should have got rid when the fans turned on him towards the end of his final season. We may have made the play-offs but that run of defeats cost us.
  • Appointing Woodgate and giving him too much time. Fans have been calling for Warnock to come in pretty much all season.

He shouldn't have taken the job on in the first place, especially as he must have known that the fans were dead set against the idea when the rumours started flying around. I have more respect for Strachan, as at least he stepped down when he could see it wasn't working.

Agreed Parmo. However, as a human, offered a job like this, it would be difficult to turn down. For me though when it bit early and when it was clear he couldn't hack it, he should have walked away. If we go down it's going to be a millstone around his neck forever and a day.

Agree

Since Aitor, he's made one massive error after another.

Signing Monk and then giving him a £50m warchest.
Replacing Monk with Pulis and letting him buy 5,000 central midfielders
Replacing Pulis with Woodgate and expecting him to turn water into wine.

Just hopefully he's got it right with Warnock otherwise say hello to a Tees Wear derby next season.

I dont blame Woody, certainly dont dislike him for trying to do something any of us would give our right arm for, his intentions were fine, his signings from the lower league were what we were asking for, the best players from the bottom league, what am I dispaointed with was Keane, IMHO & from what I seen during games, read about his non involvement was that Woody had no help from someone who should be there telling him what to do next, or whats going wrong, obviously I cant prove it but as a striker & a top one at that we had, possibly, the worst lot of strikers in my time following the Boro & showed not one jot of improving
Maybe in hindsight he should have brought Higgy in

I'm sorry erimus but I can't agree. Like I said, he must have known fans didn't want him to get the job.

I can understand the temptation being too hard to resist, but what he should have said was that he was willing to give it a go, but only if Gibson appointed an experienced coach to support him.

I know there was talk of Steve Round being appointed at one point, but after it fell through Woodgate should have given Gibson an ultimatum, and told him you either appoint somebody else or I'll have to step down.

Reality is that Woodgate was too arrogant and didn't actually think he needed the help.

Agree totally. It's Woodgate's hubris that has led to this point. Fantastic footballer but one of the worst tacticians and man managers ever to been in the hot seat IMHO.

If it turned into a Northern and Southern League One, there would be only maybe 3 competent sides to deal with Sunderland, Doncaster and Fleetwood (if they don't go up). Beyond that it's utter dross.

It would be a big rebuild, but there would be a lot of free transfers and loans available that could be used to patch together a decent enough side.

GK: Pears, Stojanovic
FB: Dijksteel, Spence, Coulson, Bola
CB: Woods, Stubbs
M: Howson, McNair, Tav, Wing, Browne
CF: Walker, Fletcher

If we lose Fry and Britt, we would probably collect a fair bit of cash to rebuild. spending 3mill in that league is like 80m in the championship

Still trying to blame Pulis:rolleyes:

He took us to 5th and 7th, higher than when he took over and significantly higher than where we are now.

There are some very important people you missed off your list of people to blame - the spoilt brats who demanded Pulis out at any cost with “literally anybody” replacing him.

You all got your wish. Not long now until you can claim your prize🔻

If wee go down & a team full of academy players then there is only one man for the job.......Tony Mowbray

In th face of avercity & hiars on the back of the neck speeches, put your arm around the young players & making them feel 10 foot tall, no one better

Though some of the Boro fans have tarnished that at Barnsley, it wont happen

Hell no.

In the cold light of day am now accepting that our position as TM would say 'is what it is'. So am wondering if anyone in the know has an idea whether we will be able to survive the financial blow of relegation to the third tier and potentially no football until 2021. The romantic in me likes the prospect of a team of hungry academy and rejects from elsewhere battling adversity, but is this realistic in the current circumstances?

This is the worry when I see posts about 'coming straight back up' etc. We don't even know what form League One will take next season, what sort of budget would be had. With all these pressing matters right there in our faces it's eve more staggering that Gibson held on as long as he did.

Ah here we go again. The defence of the old might one Pulis continues.

One day you'll let it go and realise Pulis was part of the problem and not the solution.

and yet when fans like you got their wish and he’s removed, we plummet down the table.

It’s hardly a coincidence.

Sorry. You're right. We should all be happy with permanent god awful football with no hope of gaining promotion.

Now I wonder why he's still out of work...it doesn't make sense.

“no hope of gaining promotion”

That doesn’t even stand up to basic scrutiny.

We finished 5th and 7th, we went into the final day of last season with a chance of getting into the play-offs again.

I think someone is forgetting what the play offs went like with that idiot in charge. There was more chance of the Dodo coming back from extinction than us scoring in the play offs the way he set us up.

That second leg will go down as one of the worst displays and set of tactics and use of subs I'll probably ever witness as a 'Boro fan.

And as for last season.....other than about 15 goal swing, we had no hope of getting into the play offs again going into the last game of the season.....and that was after being in the top 6 for about 90% of the season....which coincided with him breaking a long standing unwanted home record.

Monk failed
Pulis failed
Woodgate failed

Therefore Gibson has failed with all 3 managers.

But please feel free to continue to pretend Pulis was a success.
