Zack Steffen

I like them both. Dieng has certainly benefited from us being a year doen the line in terms of playing out from the back, nobody even questions stuff now that Steffen used to get hammered for from certain quarters
It is funny that isn't it. However, I've never really noticed Dieng dwelling on the ball waiting for movement in front of him like Steffen would frequently do.

Aww he loved it here and he wanted to stay.. he would have played with a bad knee for us if we had have went up..

Really enjoyed listening to that, thanks for posting. He is as laid back in real life as much as he is on the pitch. Interesting that he would have stayed if promoted. I guess there were plans for the big ‘5‘ to stay. I thought he improved under Carricks leadership (didn’t everyone), but I prefer Dieng who I think is more agile, commanding with crosses, shot stopping and has better distribution. Steffen needs game time though and I do think he needs to move on loan again come January when fit.

Wish him well

I think thats down to the players infront moving into space better and being more used to the way Carrick wants to play, often last season theyd be too static meaning there was no pass on.

I fully understand the people who say Dieng is a better all round goalkeeper, but we conceded nowhere near as many goals with Steffen in goal

We've conceded 23 goals this season in 15 games.

We'd conceded 19 in Steffen's first 15 games.

There are only 4 goals in it, and Steffen was at fault for a number of the goals at the start of last season and didn't make too many big saves early on.

There are very few goals we've conceded this season that I'd say Dieng could have done much about, though I'd class the third on Saturday as one, and he's made some huge saves.

I say it as a big Steffen fan who was really wanting him to stay, but I prefer Dieng.
Steffen has better passing, but I think Dieng is better in most other departments.

You are ignoring the fact Steffan was new to the league and needed to adapt to the way championship players try and manhandle keepers. Not knocking Dieng I like him but we conceded less with Steffen as he was a better communicator he used to organise the defence well, bollocking defenders if they were marking the wrong person or standing in the wrong place, Dieng is quicker with his feet but doesn’t organise his wall or cover as well, meaning we are conceding more from set pieces. Steffen got stronger as the season went on as players got used to the keeper playing out from the back, Dieng has benefited from the outfield players being used to this.

I think Diengs reactions are a bit better meaning his shot stopping is better but Steffen covered the angles better meaning he had less to save.

I liked Steffen and would’ve been happy for him to return but have to say Dieng has been a brilliant signing for such an agreeable fee. I’d argue Dieng has a number of attributes stronger than Steffen/more suited to Championship football too.

I also think our approach at playing out from the back has changed since last season. We’d almost exclusively slow the play down and patiently wait for an opening/the opposite team to press last year. Whereas we have mixed it up a lot more this season and with a lot more success since Coburn/Crooks have nailed down their spots. Overall very happy with Dieng and I would argue the issues with our goals against column is more down to issues with the back 4 and midfield 2.

Or another way to look at is that we are 15 games into the season and are only 5 goals away from being halfway to the total we conceded across the whole of last season.

That is definitely another way of looking at it. A bit of an odd and contrived way of looking at it mind. Certainly not a stat to be used against Dieng I would say.

Interesting stats 👍

Yeah, and we're only 8 games away from the halfway point?

We've conceded 10 in the last 8 games, largely buoyed by the defensive disasterclass of Saturday, so if we conceded the same in the next 8 gamws, we'd have conceded 5 goals more than half of the total of the entire of last season.

Last season our defence was entirely made up of experienced Championship players.
This season both of our left backs are new to England and we have a 19 year old centre back, who is also new to the country, playing as right back because our first choice is out for the season.
Our aging midfielder is another year older too.

It was no coincidence that our 3 cleansheets this season came in 3 of the 4 games that Smith had started, and Howson was on the bench.
