The midget gems were prior to and during Juninho's first season weren't they? But that trio of him Barmby and super Jan probably bought him more time as Robson clearly didn't really fancy him but his form forced him to be selected.

It was almost a Pulis - Bamford situation (if I'm allowed to mention Bamford on here again!). For whatever reason the manager just didn't really rate him and no number of good performances were ever going to change his mind.
That forward line of Higgy, Barmby and Fjortoft played some of the best attacking football I've seen. Their interplay with dummies and one-twos galore was brilliant at times. I think we bought Juninho 6 months too early.

I suppose there's never a wrong time to buy the Brazilian footballer of the year, but I know what you mean, it disrupted that forward line a bit. Bit like when Asprilla joined Newcastle.

Mind the main reason the wheels fell off that year was a really bad injury crisis.

Hignett is one of those players that played for us and wasn’t nearly as appreciated at the time as he is now. Just a perusal of all his goals for us is a perfect reminder of his importance in Boro’s history. It was criminal that he never played in the 1998 League Cup Final having scored the goal in the QF that effectively got us there.
Gazza was so surprised to be picked ahead of Higgy he gave him his losers medal iirc

Often thought Juninho wasn't the player we needed, the wing backs were poor and our keepers weren't up to it, but if Juninho wants to sign what do you do?!

He wasn't the player we most needed, that is true. But it was too big a coup to reject. I suppose an injury to Barmby or Higgy though and Jaime Moreno or a crocked Alan Moore would probably not have been an adequate replacement.

I mean, had we not signed Juninho at all and just strengthened the defence, maybe we'd have kept Barmby, stayed up in 96/97 and not reached the cup finals.

Maybe if we hadn't signed Juninho we wouldn't have signed Branco, as left back really was the position we needed to strengthen that winter, and we downgraded on Chris Morris for Branco.:D

Yes that's correct Otto, Gazza is one signing I wished never happened
TBF he did ok in his first season. If you ever watch back the footage of 98/99 where we came 9th its easy to forget that he did have quite a few good games for us. It was his second season that was a joke.

Not just his performance on the field, his remarks, for a cheap laugh, about signing for us

Guess we'll never know, but we'd have had a better chance of holding onto Merson too if we hadn't signed Gazza. I know which one I'd rather have had.

Mind maybe not putting them in the same house would've helped too. Got to be one of the most idiotic decisions the club has ever made that one.

😁, yep so true regarding hous sharing, comical

higgy was a fantastic player for us.

back in the day (1998 ish) my sister was due to miss some games whilst going into hospital and higgy came round to see her in our house and had a cup of tea. he visited her in the freeman hospital too after the op and then took about 12 of the family around the riverside for an impromptu tour. top guy and a class act

What a lovely story 👍

Another scouser was Tom brewitt but he never made an impact despite bigging himself up alot on arrival from liverpool

Higgy for me but I actually liked Phil Boersma who did give a full shift- he just wasn't that good!
Still, that was in my teenage years half a century ago and I suppose anyone coming from the 'Pool to little Middlesbrough must have been good. Or mad.

I never quite understood the Phil Boersma signing, although I was only young when he came. A bit like the Peter Davenport signing I guess, lots of promise just didn't work out.
