Can we put together a squad from our history that could win today’s champions league? Was out running today and the players popping into my head as I was going just got me thinking, I’ll lay down my all time best boro squad and see how it compares with your own.

GK: Schwarzer, Valdes and Given
RB: Raiziger and Geremi
LB: Ziege and Hardwick
CB: Southgate, Woodgate, Ehiogu and Huth
LM: Zenden and Downing
RM: Mendieta and Karembou
CM: Souness, Robson, Ince and Gascoigne
AM: Juninho, Mannion and Merson
S: Clough, Ravanelli, Boksic, Viduka and Hasselbaink

Mines a 27 man squad, didn’t know where to cut the fat upfront! By big name I mean players who achieved significant things in the game or who had a massive reputation, doesn’t necessarily have to have been at there best whilst with us either. I did struggle with centre backs, we’ve not had too many who’ve achieved a boatload in there playing careers here.

Wonder what my squad would achieve if all in there prime, against todays Man City or Real Madrid.

Suspect you'll get much squealing about your CB picks from the old school...

We've had some great players over the years but even bringing them all together shows that we haven't had many that have achieved a lot of success in their careers. Even if you pick a best 11 and then compare it to the current Man City team I'm not sure there are many that would get in their team.

No place for a centre forward who got twenty or more goals in eight seasons, including 59 in his best season?

I suppose it depends if you're talking about each of those players in their career prime or their form when playing for us.

If it's the latter i'd be dropping Gascoigne and Boksic and I think you've got a cracking squad there. Possibly replace the Reizeger we saw with Danny Mills or maybe even Curtis.

I'd hazard a guess that the inclusion of Valdes would suggest it's the former rather than the latter.

Bit harsh.
I always thought Jimmy's Eddie Murphy comparison was unfair.
And who cares how big Viduka was around the hips? He used it to his advantage.

It's not as if you picked Mido or Foggon.

I don’t think this is far off. But the conversation will inevitably drift towards players who were “better” etc even though it’s clearly not about that.

That said, Souness and Clough became much bigger names after leaving, as did Pallister (who you left out), and you’ve also left out Craig Johnston (who did the same).

Are we talking about their peak at any time in their career, or how they were when with us.

If the latter, Gascoigne didn't do anywhere near enough with us to warrant inclusion and in the OP line-up should be replaced with Boateng.

As above, depends if its from their time with us or their peak during their career.

Nobody finds a spot for Emerson? I'd also take Luke Young at RB over Reizeger, every successful team has hard working, quality team players who aren't superstars or big names.

The OP does say they players don't necessarily have to have been at their best while they were at Boro.
