Would English league football survive if no foreigners played in it.

The game has changed so much since my first one in 1968. Especially since the formation of the Premier league when some clubs played a full team with no home representation. I was wondering what the effect would be if we (for whatever reason) lost the foreign players. I am not trying to turn the clock back. Just musing.

Surely it would? 65 million in the UK and it's the main sport. It would also force clubs to focus on local kids.
The quality may not be the same but...

It might well have to after Brexit. Not just cos of restrictions but if the pound plummets....

It would be amusing if the government stopped handing out work permits. It's not as though there's a shortage of willing footballers. On a more serious note, it's difficult to see an argument to allow overseas players below, say, Premier League level without extending work permits to all skilled trades.

Would love to see a successful UK based team in the Premier league. It will never happen in my life time, thanks to SKY, BT and the rest of the Greed league sponsors.

Long ago, when George Hardwick had a column in the Sports Gazette, he posited that England should sign up players (much as in cricket today), but not only that, England should play as a side in the league, in order to work them up to their best performance. Nowadays you would have to put them in the Championship, the PL would be too much for them.

Might survive but it wouldn't be half as good. Imagine if we hadn't seen the Juninhos, Henrys Bergkamps Ronaldos et al. I hate the diving and play acting that some overseas players bring but I love watching their talents.

Wouldn't cost as much either. I think the loss would be marginal. Said it before, as happy watching back when it was the holgate.

Am I misunderstanding?
You think England as a team would not be able to compete in the PL?

Well, the best English players would be either too expensive to give contracts to, or else had retired early from internationals to concentrate on 'financial security'. Look at how young the current England side look. Half of them fringe players with big clubs, most of their experience gained on loan to Championship sides.

Ive probably misunderstood. You're meaning an England team from scratch I guess, whereas I was thinking England as is now.

Yes & standard would depend on the quality of coaching.. ourv boggo players can be just as mediocre as the foreign lads.. imho foreign signings should be the best in the team not the foundations..
