Worst Ever Boro 11 - We have our team!

This may be controversial but there was nothing wrong with Ben Roberts IMO. He conceded the cup final goal but to me you’d be hard pushed to find a ‘keeper who wasn’t 12 or so yards off his line so early in a game. The fact an opposition midfielder could waltz through the middle of the field and launch a shot at goal - completely unchallenged - after 40secs was always the real issue. God knows what the rest of the team were doing.

It’s too easy and simplistic to blame goalkeepers. I haven’t seen every goalkeeper in the 147-year history of the club but I’m almost certain there’ll have been a poorer one than Roberts.
Yeah, Ben Roberts was decent.

This thread i know is a bit of fun but its ridiculous. i wasnt a fan of hoyte or roberts and didnt really rate cox but they are far from the worst players we have had. Espinosa was decent in a few matches and played at a good standard.

Barragan gets so much stick i dont really see why other than his stupid throw ins. He was playing in the premier league, we have had players who couldnt lace his boots who looked far worse in poorer leagues. Chris Morris wasnt perfect but solid.

And people who put a name forward and dont even know what position the player played... quite odd

Liburd was ok ... tended to dribble into trouble but he was ok

Liburd was a left back he replaced Jimmy Phillips. Had Falconer and Phillips not been sold and later Kernaghan maybe we would have scraped into the playoffs that season.

Who replaced Falconer that season? Vickers replaced Kernaghan

I think we just have to accept certain moments, eg Roberts in the cup final and Barragans foul throws are going to stand out more than a mediocre player without such high profile moments. People basically forget lots with the passage of time.

This is a tough one. Good ones - easy. John Craggs, Curtis Fleming and Luke Young etc. Richard Liburd could be good entertainment - I once saw him slalom his way out of the penalty area, beating about 5 players on the way, with the entire crowd shrieking ‘Get Rid!!’ with increasing hysteria with every touch. But I think for sheer disappointment I’d also go with Justin Hoyte. Luke Young had been SO good, and I think we all assumed that Hoyte would pretty much slot in and be just as good. Which, unfortunately, was just like assuming Rudy would be the new Hickton.

And although Luke Young was very good and Curtis was a great servant, I’d still say that Craggsy is probably the only truly great RB we’ve had.

I thought Espinosa would be slightly controversial. The obvious one is always Maxi Haas.

Espinosa arrived injured and by the sounds of it jumped straight into the dressing room split. I think a few more players from that season need to be remembered for being shyte..
throwing a strop and being unprofessional is being shyte. Hoyte gets more stick than he deserves as does Willo Flood.. it’s not about the single unlucky gaffs for me, the turd of a manager or even daft haircuts.

Can fmttm come to some sort of consensus re our worst ever 11?

4-4-2 formation to simplify things and needs to have played more than 5 games to avoid 1 or 2 game wonders like Alan Wright and Andy Dibble (2nd spell).

I propose doing one position daily and highest number of votes gets into the team then move onto then next position.

Without further a do, my nomination for the worst Boro GK of my lifetime is :

Bettinelli

Update - we have our fmttm endorsed hapless keeper!

1. Ben Roberts
Ben Roberts chosen.
I think Lumley has got away with one there...
:(

Barragan is a ridiculous shout. The foul throws were annoying but he was otherwise ok but maybe underwhelming in a poor team. It wasn't like we were thinking "oh god they're just going to target Barragan" every match. He held his own.

If he makes the team then this thread has lost all legitimacy. Cyrus Christie for example, was far more of a liability. A right back who can't defend the back post is more of an issue than one who takes the odd foul throw.

Bobby Thomson?

I remember Barragan started that season on fire at left back

8 foul throws in the premier league, our third most expensive transfer that summer.

So less than one a game. Annoying but doubt it really cost us at all.

He can make the bench as our throw in specialist, but no chance he's our worst ever right back.
our defence wasn’t there that season and he was very much part of that.
he wasn’t as good as Justin Hoyte..

Lumley was far worse than Guzan.

Guzan at least had the excuse that he was playing in the top division against Man City, Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea.

Lumley was making mistakes weekly in the Championship.
Brad Guzman was consistently bad at the level he was brought in for. Joe Lumley has some bloopers.. but he also had some good games.
