OK, it worked for the first 3-4 months for Wilder, but for about 6 months now it has been an utter and abject failure

What exactly are the coaches at Boro doing in training post wilder?

Oh, lads, er, lets go with the same formation for the last 6 months, maybe it will just click

Mark the wingbacks out the game and were toothless, it has been sussed, months ago!!

Try something else FFS, it is gettign embarrasing, just becaue we scrape a 1-0 win every 5-6 games it doesn't justify continuing to play this way

Why not try something else, why? i can't get my head around it, i seriously can't

It needs to be abandoned with the next coach/manager as we just don’t have the runners in midfield.

4-2-3-1 or 4-4-2 is the way to go with the squad we have accumulated.

While I agree, I don't think we were ever likely to have ripped up the tactics until a new head coach is confirmed. Wilder was sacked on Monday they then had one day before Birmingham, then recovery day and again one day before Millwall. It would be chaos to try and change to a new system in that time frame, and then a new guy would likely change it again anyway. It was the right thing to do to keep the system the players have been playing and training in for the past year. The only thing you could realistically do in the time frame is freshen up the starting 11 and try and boost confidence. Hopefully Carrick is confirmed Monday and we can start to improve. I hate wingbacks personally so I hope he doesn't play like that.

Fcuk Wilder!

It's a specialist position that needs great athleticism and game awareness.
Given that we struggle to put one foot in front of the other I think we leave this to the professionals and just keep it simple.

We somehow got away with a young debutant (Jones) holding his own on the right wing - then threw defensive duties on top of his responsibilities and and crossed our fingers.

Giles puts in a lovely cross but not sure I've seen him make a tackle yet.

The problem is wilder created a side that can’t really play any other way. The players just aren’t there.

4231 wouldn't work with our wingers. Our wingers are wing backs, not wide forwards. That formation needs the wingers to be goal scorers, ours aren't. Our midfield doesn't create so there would be no link between midfield and attack either.

We have to play to our strengths. We have decent centre backs and full backs, decent wingers and decent strikers. Our midfield is weak. They are ok but average. They aren't proper defensive midfielders or attacking midfielder.

I think the only formation that makes sense is 442. We might get overrun in midfield but you'd hope playing Giles and Jones as the wingers that we have enough defensive minded players in the team to remain solid.

I'm not convinced any formation is going to work though because our midfield simply isn't good enough.

There is a bit of both Yearby - but just looking at Jones and Giles they are clearly more happy going forward. I even think they could play as outright wingers.
True but the central midfield is a major issue too.

You could be right but I don’t think the formation had much to do with todays shambles.

It would make no difference, its all the same players who are performing badly
It would definitely make us more direct having dedicated wingers though. IMO The problem with our wing back system and why it seems so slow and ponderous when attacking is that our defensive midfielders aren’t mobile enough to get back and cover when our wing backs go forward, meaning they are reluctant to risk going past their man in the final third incase they lose the ball. Having full backs behind them would stop this to an extent

442 would be better. Full backs behind Jones and Giles would make us more solid. Plus they can overlap making it harder just to mark the wing backs out of the game.

Whatever formation we play we desperately need to get some legs in CM in January.

I'd try a 4-2-3-1 to see if we can become harder to beat. Probably Mcgree in the no 10 with Jones and Giles either side of him.

Not sure who the 2 holding midfielders would be - probably Howson and crooks/McNair.
