There were only 101 people that caught COVID out of 12,000 in the placebo group. They were really struggling to find sick people to complete the trial so has to change countries to Brazil. 1 person died in the placebo group although it’s not clear what killed the person or whether it was a reaction to the vaccine used in the placebo. So 30 caught COVID in the 12,000 vaccine group and 131 caught it in the 12,000 placebo group. That’s where they get their 70% effectiveness from.
more transparency required. What the trial did suggest was that there was hardly any covid around, even in Brazil.
From the figures I've seen, 131 in total caught it with 30 with the vaccine. So you'd expect 101 to get it from the vaccine group at zero effectiveness. 71 people out of 101 didn't get it, which is how they calculate the 70%.

I will have it but -
its my choice and I willrespect those who make a different choice.

Behaviuoural scientist the other morning discussing why some will/won’t,
It is abiout the 3 ‘C’s
Convenience - make it easy to get
Complacency - each person will assess the risk/reward depending on what they know/feel
Confidence - in both the efficacy of the drug and those giving the instructions to us.

I can understand people who have doubts in some of the areas above.

It is also worth a moment talking about the priorities.
It is well documented that those at major risk/need are
* The elderly
* The Obese
* Front line health workers (Maybe other front line workers too)
* BAME
* The socially deprived

I do hope we all wait patiently in line until people in those categories have had the vaccine first.
I'd say 85% of this country fall under those categories :oops:

Ah well that’s where we are being misled. It doesn’t say that the 30 with the vaccine didn’t get it. They just didn’t get it quite as much.

I believe they found a pre existing condition in the person who died on Brazil that they didn't know about before the trial during an autopsy.

I've booked my day off work in 2022 ready for my vaccination.

You are going to get a load of FB experts, stuffed full of conspiracy theories absolutely categorically refusing to have the vaccine, ever, at any cost.

Proper Francis Begbie moment "I'm nae putting that shyte in MY body"

Then legislation is passed where you can't go to the pub, or on a plane without proof you have been vaccinated.

"''scuse me, out of the way, I'm first in the queue......."

🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

Fear of after effects? Nerves about something being directly injected into your bloodstream that seems to have been rushed through clinical trials and, if is a available soon, rushed through regulatory approval?
I would advise anyone on here to do their own homework regarding this and listen to others, whether for or against. The people selling the vaccines cannot be trusted to be unbiased as they have business reasons for wanting theirs chosen and likewise the anti-vaxxers, respect their reasons but make your own judgement.
Just bear in mind that Glaxo Smithkline are still paying out compensation for what happened with the rushed swine flu vaccine.

Astrazeneca are making nothing out of the vaccine during the pandemic. That's why their shares price dropped by 3% whereas Pfizer and Moderna share prices rose on their announcements.

Weak immune systems will
People who have immune systems that don't function won't be able to though, no.

Apparently that amounts to hundreds of thousands of people in this country, so it's even more important that everyone else is vaccinated to protect those people.

Cheers, that's interesting as of course there are plenty of other vaccines they can have and are indeed encouraged to have (eg flu, pneumonia). Wonder why this one is different. Contain live virus or something?

I'm probably borderline for it then. I'm on an immunosuppresent but don't think it's particularly powerful one as according to my rheumatologist wasn't in a high or even moderate risk group for Covid.

See Coluka above. "I will happily have it tomorrow if I could."

Obviously I'm not col but I took that to mean "I'd take it tomorrow if it was ready" ready meaning it's been through the necessary trials etc.

I could be wrong though and maybe he did mean just give it to me now whatever state it's in and to hell with the consequences 🤷

Sorry, I've not phrased it well, it's nothing to do with this specific vaccine.

There are people whose immune systems are so non-functioning, be it from an underlying condition, illness or treatment, that vaccines don't really work on them, because their body can't produce an immune response.

Hopefully you're not one of them.

Jab trialled for people who cannot be vaccinated

That’s not actually true. There are plenty of checks and balances in place and Pharma companies know how catastrophic sending out a defect medicine. Not to mention the wealth of regulators who make sure they can’t.

my only concern with this one is, if it gets approved soon, we can’t possible know the side affects because we don’t really know what the virus is yet

Given that 20,000 volunteers have had it (in the Oxford trial), 43,000 in one of the others with fairly limited side effects.... I think I'd feel relatively OK about having it tomorrow.

uh huh. so all medicinal side effects happen immediately now do they?

You love your condescending approaches don't you.

I never for one moment suggested that all side effects happen straight away did I. I'd basically be happy to be a volunteer. At this stage after tens of thousands of people have already had the 'test' vaccines, some of the short term risks would have been exposed. Longer term ones obviously not.

You should have said you'd be happy to volunteer. you tone made it sound like you felt it was safe. Still sorry you didn't like my tone
