Just come across another very sad case of someone that has had COVID twice - confirmed by tests. Second time has been left with lung damage. Was previously fit and healthy.
Cannot wait to get a vaccine.
Rob will you please stop scare-mongering readers with these statements "I know someone who..." You're supposed to be the admin of this site so please show some common sense with your posts.

Expat there are real risks when you get covid ,I think that's what Rob is trying to get across. You really don't know how it will impact you until you catch it.

I completely understand the reasons to be scared of the virus but Rob should not under any circumstances promoting the vaccine or should he be scaremongering people into taking the vaccine. Firstly he’s not really qualified to give such a blanket statement and secondly if he wants to he should probably use a different platform for voicing his opinions on the vaccine.

Anyone who says no prob, in my view, hasn't actually had covid.

Why? Plenty of people will have had it, many without even knowing, and will be immune. I know a number of people who have been confirmed to have had it and many more who almost certainly had it back in Feb/March/April (based on classic symptoms as there was limited testing now). Based on my own mild symptoms (fatigue, fever) after contact with two lab mates who had the classic cough, muscle aches, fever, and loss of taste I reckon I had it but cannot be sure.

The logistics of vaccinating a whole population (which isn't needed) is enormous anyway. Even those clamouring to access it may actually never get one. Same for the mass testing and "freedom pass" nonsense they're on about.

60 million people twice a week, Think about that, 120 million tests a week. I can't see it. It's a ridiculous idea for many other practical reasons anyway before getting into legal/ethical.

If you have any hope of travelling by plane overseas in the short term I suggest you may well need to get one. Already Aussie Airline Qantas boss has stated that flyers will need a certificate of inoculation to board thier flights.

Once there's a vaccine which has had its full phase 3 results published and peer-reviewed, and it has received the appropriate approvals from the regulatory authorities, then yes, I'll take it.

We're not there yet, though.

My immune system isn't compromised, and I want to help things to return to normal, of course I will.

I might have misinterpreted what you're saying, but have you seen something suggesting those with a weak immune system (eg due to other medication etc) won't be able to take the vaccine?

As we stand right now the vaccine is in name only -- granted there's been some heavy hitters involved in the development of the vaccine but let's be very clear just because there's a "said vaccine" that's between 70-90 per cent effective that doesn't mean to say it'll prevent you from getting Covid [you could be in the unlucky 10-30 percent]. So where does that leave us? Maybe wearing masks and socially distancing for months probably for years afterwards? More to the point if this "said vaccine" doesn't do all that it's been cracked up to be then what? Now let's say you get the vaccine only to contract the virus afterwards -- what happens next-- ok you isolate and then what-- you have to go for more checks and it's found that your not a suitable candidate for the vaccine -- what does that mean?-- will you be made to distance yourself from the rest of society, will you be no longer eligible for health or life insurance? The list and the fall out from Covid will be endless.

I'm no virologist but my understanding is if it's 70% effective and you manage to vaccinate most of the population then that'll do enough to cut the lines of transmission. So even if you're in the "30%" it doesn't work for or don't have the vaccine you'll still be very unlikely to catch it.

It'll take a while to vaccinate enough people for this to kick in, but 70% effectiveness is enough to return things to "normal".

Button it fool

Exactly my position.

Yeah I always look to a football club fanzine editor for all my medical opinions, and will be slavishly following his advice. He's as entitiled as anyone to voice his opinions on the vaccine, on what is his messageboard.

@fmttmadmin - You still alright to come round and look at the boil I told you about ?

How on earth is saying you know someone who has had covid scaremongering you utter goofball. Nearly a million and a half people have died of it! It's like accusing someone of scaremongering because they say they know someone who has diabetes...

I will have it but -
its my choice and I willrespect those who make a different choice.

Behaviuoural scientist the other morning discussing why some will/won’t,
It is abiout the 3 ‘C’s
Convenience - make it easy to get
Complacency - each person will assess the risk/reward depending on what they know/feel
Confidence - in both the efficacy of the drug and those giving the instructions to us.

I can understand people who have doubts in some of the areas above.

It is also worth a moment talking about the priorities.
It is well documented that those at major risk/need are
* The elderly
* The Obese
* Front line health workers (Maybe other front line workers too)
* BAME
* The socially deprived

I do hope we all wait patiently in line until people in those categories have had the vaccine first.

I might have misinterpreted what you're saying, but have you seen something suggesting those with a weak immune system (eg due to other medication etc) won't be able to take the vaccine?

Weak immune systems will
People who have immune systems that don't function won't be able to though, no.

Apparently that amounts to hundreds of thousands of people in this country, so it's even more important that everyone else is vaccinated to protect those people.

There were only 101 people that caught COVID out of 12,000 in the placebo group. They were really struggling to find sick people to complete the trial so has to change countries to Brazil. 1 person died in the placebo group although it’s not clear what killed the person or whether it was a reaction to the vaccine used in the placebo. So 30 caught COVID in the 12,000 vaccine group and 131 caught it in the 12,000 placebo group. That’s where they get their 70% effectiveness from.
more transparency required. What the trial did suggest was that there was hardly any covid around, even in Brazil.
