Will we ever learn?

Should all movement ( people animals and trade) and farming of these animals be stopped right now in the country's below? Or will this become another outbreak ( covid20)

As many as 17 million minks are to be culled in Denmark after a mutated version of the coronavirus that can spread to humans was detected on mink farms.

Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said the mutated virus posed a "risk to the effectiveness" of a future Covid-19 vaccine.

Denmark is the world's biggest producer of mink fur.

Police said the culling should happen as soon as possible.

Coronavirus cases have been detected in mink farms in Denmark's northern Jutland region, and in other parts of Europe, for several months.

But cases are spreading fast in Denmark, and five cases of the new virus strain were found on mink farms. Twelve people had become infected, the authorities said.

Prime Minister Frederiksen described the situation as "very, very serious".

She cited a government report which said the mutated virus had been found to weaken the body's ability to form antibodies, potentially making the current vaccines under development for Covid-19 ineffective.

"We have a great responsibility towards our own population, but with the mutation that has now been found, we have an even greater responsibility for the rest of the world as well," she told a news conference.

Minks at more than 1,000 farms are to be culled. Police Chief Thorkild Fogde said it would be a "very large undertaking".

Spain culled 100,000 minks in July after cases were detected at a farm in Aragón province, and tens of thousands of the animals were slaughtered in the Netherlands following outbreaks on farms there.

Studies are under way to find out how and why minks have been able to catch and spread the infection

Whats the end goal?

Viruses mutate from animals to humans, always have done, always will. Do we ban all movement of animals, and ban people from any country that farms any animal. Which is every country

I'm sure the epidemiologists responsible for gathering and interpreting the data aren't just making it up, and it's good to know the authorities are taking it seriously and doing something about it.

I\m sure they are not either. It\s just the OP was a bit reactionary and seems amazed that this could happen again, despite it happening a lot.

I am not the only one concerned

I'm not saying it's not concerning. Just reacting more to the thread title and first paragraph. What do you mean by when will we learn? What do you want to do with the knowledge that viruses mutate to humans. As I pointed out it could be any animal that is farmed. So what is the end goal?

I would suggest exactly the same as the doctor in the video, put safety first and close the boarders , if there is the chance of a second epidemic I hope the lessons will have been learnt from covid19, had that virus even contained and extinguish in China millions of people could still be alive today not to mention the economic cost which will be hardest felt by the young and poorer in society, hence the title....Will we learn?

This new strain was 12 infected its now 214 infected but their airport remains open, the potential is for this to spread is very real.

boarders?

Do we have to do this every time a virus goes novel? Because we'd be closing the borders A LOT. SARS, MERS, Swine Flu, Bird Flu. we'd essentially be North Korea!
