Wilder's comments on the kids

Disappointing. We have an established academy with a wide catchment area. It is one of the few natural advantages the club has. Have a small squad, use academy players as back up options.

No problem with his comments. We didn't have any of the youth players starting the first game last season and then ended up having to play Spence and Jones the next match. Things change all the the time and he's admitted that there is always a chance of a breakthrough.

What his statement does do is emphasise Wilder's determination and single minded focus on getting us promoted this season.

To be fair, I think it'd be rediculous to suggest any of the young lads should be in the first team on the back of friendlies against Bishop Auckland and York City. If they still perform against higher quality opposition then it's a different matter. Plus, injuries and loss of form will possibly create opportunities next season.

I don't expect these youngsters to make the first squad of the season is not the same as shutting the door completely on them.

I'm a bit disappointed with this really - whilst I wouldn't necessarily want any of them starting I'd hope some of them would be in and around the squad this season.
The article calls them 'young boys'. Gibson is 21 in September. Dodds is 22 in January. They both signed new contracts in the summer, so if not now, when?
He obviously thinks they're either not ready or not good enough. He's just being honest about whether he thinks they can play to the level expected.
I'd expect a fair few to go out on loan and get games under their belt

Players in Potugal
Goalkeepers Liam Roberts Luke Daniels Oli Swan

Defenders : Anfernee Dijksteel, Paddy McNair, Darragh Lenihan, Dael Fry, Tommy Smith, Hayden Coulson, Jack Robinson, Bryant Bilongo, Daniel Dodds

Midfielders : Jonny Howson, Hayden Hackney, Matt Crooks, Marcus Tavernier, Caolan Boyd-Munce, Joe Gibson, Riley McGree, Isaiah Jones, Ryan Giles

Forwards: Duncan Watmore, Josh Coburn, Cal Kavanagh, Sonny Finch
Bola Payero injured
Looking at that list who is certain a first team squad member
1 goalkeeper
5 defenders + Bola and Smith if we sign him
6 midfielders + Payero if he is ever fit
2 forwards + Muniz dramatic appearance
Bit thin on the ground at the moment

Even if they're not good enough?
They need a chance to show whether they are good enough. Would we have got downing cattermole Johnson Morrison if McLaren hadn't been so positive towards the youth team. He gave plenty of players who didn't make it chances as well, Davies, Kennedy etc. You don't know until you chuck them in.

Would Jones have made such an impact last season if we had two players in his position in front of him?

Have we got players of that calibre at the club now, 2 youth cup finals wasn't it?

Probably not. But we are at a lower level too.
You will also attract more players if you show that there is a pathway to the first team. Pick up all the kids who know they've got no chance of getting in Newcastle's team.
