Wilderball

In seriousness, watching that clip shows how one-sided we are. The 3 on the right Jones, Crooks and Dijksteel all link really well. On the left we are unbalanced. Taylor isn't comfortable as a winger and McNair can't support like Dijksteel does because he is on the wrong side being right footed. I do like that the front two don't really get involved out wide which means they are always in the box so their defenders can't come out to defend. It pins them back really well and allows us to be patient.

To be fair after that goal McNair was really pushing forward in the second half, getting right on the edge of their box. Instead of linking up with Taylor, just going direct and bringing one or two of their defender on to him, leaving the likes of Crooks/Tav with space to either go direct or move it to the right.

Watching last night I didn't realise how long we'd actually held on to the ball for, prior to the goal. Superb that.

I said last night that we are letting the ball do a lot of the work whereas in the past we'd be knocking it into space and having to chase it down.
We've definitely evolved as a side in a relatively short time. If we can get the recruitment right and provide players who'll flourish playing in this way them Wilder could become one of most successful managers.
The other thing to note is that we are not exclusively about working opportunities like that, we also have the pace and guile to hit teams on the break as well.
We almost had a picture book example of it late in the first half when we broke out from the right back area and Crooks pinged a ball out to the left wing which Watmore just failed to control. Had he done so he'd have been in on goal with only the keeper to beat.

Yep, definitely more a threat down the right. Hopefully the left should improve when Bola is back and I think McGree will be charged with making an impact in that area of the pitch.

I've noticed Balogun coming out to the left frequently when brought on. Could be his natural side but it wouldn't surprise me if he's tasked with helping out with ball retention down the left flank.
I think McGree will be back up generally to save Tav's legs

The advantage of having Taylor there though is that it does give that insurance defensively when Jones is pushing right up we very easily can shuffle into a back 4 temporarily.
You're right though regarding going forward, and it's part of the reason Tav doesn't get the space that Crooks finds to drop into on the right

Keeping it simple brings results.
what I like best about that is we switched the point of attack so many times from right to left, to right, to left, to centre to left, to right.

We kept the full width of the pitch, but compressed their whole team into a about 10 metres of the pitch and the width of the 18. Theire midfield were absolutely chasing shaodws, and reverted to effectively dropping into what was already a deep back 4. They were worried we pass through them so kept dropping until it was not far off a back nine.

That goal was a thing of beauty that would even delight Pep

To be honest I don't think Dijksteel is the best attacking, he gives it his all but h's limited. If we get a left CB in the summer then move McNair to RCB it will make a huge difference both flanks.

As for Taylor, he's an elostoplast over what was a gapping wound in our squad. I doubt he will be here next season, if he is it'lll be as backup. He does a job but isn't the ideal fit. I'm not sure if Bola will be the answer, we'll find out soon, but I would think a decent LWB will be high on his scouting list right now

yes, if you look at it not one of our players has to do a hard sprint in that whole play, it's all to feet, all controlled the ball doing the work. QPR have 5 or 6 times to sprint to keep pressure on the ball and all of their players are working hard to keep us out...until they don't keep us out

I think Djiksteel may be replaced in the summer. He's not bad defensively but (considering he's a former Dutch u21 international) I expect more from him with the ball.

I think you could be right about Paddy switching to RCB and a new left footed footballing centre half coming in on the left side.

when you think that McNair has played RWB for his his country and can put a great cross in, then RCB with license to support should be ideal for him

I'd be interested to see how Bola would perform at LCB. Might be something to consider in the future.

He was also pushing forward in the first half and was out of position for the first goal where Howson was covering
on the left leaving Chair completely unmarked. Dijksteel and Fry realised too late to challenge.
