Based on past experience, none of us can reliably predict promotion outcomes - whether its automatic or via the play-offs.
Fulham are the exception - uncatchable all season. They`ve been in top league spot all season - apart from one game, where they dropped to second.
Today was bitterly disappointing. But we have to take it on the chin. Neither players, Manager, club, nor us fans can give up now. In retrospect - its turned out to be an exciting season, reignited passion and belief. Perhaps its the fact we have become used to high powered performances, that makes today hard to swallow?
We go again. As Chris commented post match:
"We missed an opportunity. I am a bit baffled. Every player had a 4 or 5 [today], but against Fulham they were 8`s and 9`s". We "werent good enough all over the pitch". "Everybody has a poor day"[in football]. "Im experienced enough to know that we can lose a game by not keeping to those levels we need to".
"Players are on the back end of the season, with six games left to go.......they dont need me to pat them on the back of their head or motivate them.......I cant legislate when players pass the ball out of play. Its hard to evaluate".
"If you want to be in a top team"[talking about the medium and long-term future] you cant go from Wednesday to today - you have to win".
"Im not a good loser" - it hurts and it hurts the players.
"We have to give ourselves a bit of a shake" - by Monday morning.
"Most footballers are competitive animals. [Losing] becomes part of being a pro." There`s no excuses when it comes to commitment and consistency.
"There are quite a few teams who would swop positions with us still".
There`s six games to go - eighteen points available. Thats a lot of points.
Its clearly not over yet for Chris Wilder.
"We want to keep going and add to that points total [but] today we werent good enough".
Perhaps we need to put today in context - off the back of an unbeaten 8 game home run - a superb winning cup run against two top Premiership sides, sell out crowds, it is the like of defeats against QPR, Barnsley, Hull and Blackburn - which reveal the weaknesses in the squad and highlights just what has to be done before next season. Whether that is in the Premiership or the Championship. It is clear that there is work to be done at both ends of the pitch. The job is to have a cosistent, high performance mentality and approach. We may already be able to see who may be heading out the door, but we cant give up - we will soon know where we are going to be next season. 10,000 early bird tickets already sold - in financially challenging times - is testament to the faith we have in Chris Wilder, his Management and the future.
Lets not forget how far we have come.
Tomorrow is another day.
We only know what winning feels like after weve lost.
So lets get on with it and get back on the journey.
