Why is it as a club we continue to have the same issues and problems?

Before anyone starts this is not knocking but it is born out of frustration. We have the same old, same old issues year in, year out. Such as-

Goalkeeper - not had a really decent one since Randolph.
Wide players- still not have anyone who can really nail down a starting position.
Strikers- arguably one of the poorest selection of strikers in the division.
Pace- still look very lumbering and often appear outpaced.
Ball retention- a really weak part of our game.
None of these issues have, in my opinion, been resolved despite an overhaul of the squad.

Worrying lessons continue not to be learnt

Look on the bright side.

With such a poor squad a relegation battle will be more exciting than floundering around in mid table.

Much as we insiders know its not true we have to accept is that Teesside is not a big attraction for a 20s something with more money than they know what to with.
Lets face it Teesside is a place that a lot of people want to leave behind to enrich their lives.

recruitment will always be a problem because of this.
Over the last 30 years we have over achieved to quote southgate in this department if anything

They don't have to live on Teesside though do they? Plenty of Leeds players live in Harrogate (as have plenty of ours in the past). Plenty of Newcastle players live in Wynyard. Both in striking distance of Rockcliffe and I'd say it's a safe bet there are plenty of players playing for London teams who face a longer journey to training given the congestion etc.

So Teesside itself shouldn't be an issue. If it is, then that's poor work by the recruitment department who should be making that clear.

Don’t understand why but we’ve never been free-scoring, we’re not a Bournemouth.

But also, we’ve only had 3 good teams in the last 15 years (Karanka just before promotion - to be fair loads of goals; Karanka promotion, 1-0 everywhere; **** end of McClaren’s team in 2005-06) and none of them have been built around scoring goals.

Who knows why!

We've attracted top players from all over the world. Albeit the money on offer was different to now but if Teesside was really that bad we wouldn't have signed these players. There's beautiful countryside on our doorstep. Nice coastal areas nearby. Give me Teesside over London any day of the week. It can't be that bad as I recall Mendieta staying in the area for years after leaving Boro. As a previous poster points out, they don't have to live on Teesside, many choose Harrogate which isn't too far from the training ground.

Why?
Well McLaren wasn't particularly defensive. It's not really bourne out in the goals scored and conceded. He was just pragmatic like pretty much every coach who doesn't have 200 million to spend in the transfer window. Whereas the fans want 11 fancy arses on the pitch. The sort who don't track back. Woodgates team was pretty much this. Promising attacking football, but not taking into account the fact there's a team that wants to stop you and they will be attacking themselves. Can you imagine us going to old Trafford, playing 442 with two wingers these days?

Then there's the fact that everyone and their uncle wants to play open expansive attacking football. Everyone wants this to be in the teams DNA. part of the golden thread. The fact that everyone wants to play like this means it's going to be more difficult to attract coaches and players suited to this style, because there's much more competition. Which is why we got woodgate. We tried to get jokanovic. He wanted 50 million to spend in the transfer window because he's smart enough to know you can't make a silk purse out of an Ayala and shotton back line. So you have to appoint someone unknown, because you can only get someone from the bottom of the pile, which is just rolling the dice with pretty poor odds.

Agree with the above. Always amazes me when fans say Boro can't attract players.
Maybe 15/20 years ago

a big reason for that is outside of a few teams, we were one of the few that would pay high wages for the time. People will come for the right money.

the problem is now we simply can’t compete with a bucket load of clubs now, financially. The game moved on and pretty much left Boro behind when it comes to the money clubs can pay for players. That’s why we have spent the last 12 years in the 2nd tier except one year.

even by Championship standards, we’re not making any real ambitious signings now. Just putting together a squad of ok players, hoping they might improve and see how it goes.

we can’t really attract good players anymore, we haven’t got the status or the dough. We’re just treading water as a club because we haven’t got the means to really push anymore. Too many clubs ahead of us these days.

This is why we have to be so much more clever than we have been. Sides like Brentford and even Barnsley to some extent have shown what can be achieved when you invest in good recruitment. Hopefully poaching the guy from Norwich who brought the likes of Buendia and Pukki over is the start of that. Give him the job of building us a top class recruiting team here.
