Why does anyone who talks about football...

That actually is one of my biggest annoyances. It's creeping in over here a lot. They are not a singular as they are a team of at least 11 and they represent a town of 250k+. In what way can they be referred to in the singular?
It's because a team is an entity, in the same way as a company. You wouldn't say MFC were formed in 1876. You'd say MFC was formed in 1876. It should be " Boro is playing Preston", but I know most people think that's wrong.

On Strictly Come Dancing, when announcing the results, ditzy Tess alternates between "the next couple through to next week IS... xxx," with "through to next week are... xxx".

Same thing - a couple is an entity.

The one that grinds my gears is "he should of went down". That's just so wrong.
