Why do the Scottish hate England?

Like it seems to be deep rooted absolute hatred for anything English. I know Scotland and England have past history, even civil wars, but its 2024 and I can't understand why it still continues. Me personally I don't hate any of the home nations, but some of the people from those countries have absolute hatred for us when we all probably have some mixed British and Irish blood in us, I know I do, I'm % English, Irish, Scottish, Swedish, Norwegian and Finnish.

They (largely) hate Westminster, they (commonly) hate the monarchy. They hate our football team, not because ours is that good, but because theirs is unbelievably bad for a developed country of 5.5m; even just compared to other countries in the British Isles.

I like Scotland as a place to visit, and most Scottish people, but I do honestly sometimes struggle to understand why the countries remain united poltically. There seems to be little in it for either party, at least if you ask Joe Public.

I enjoy your posts GE, but that is a crazy statement to ask why the Scottish hate the English haha.

Thousands of years of history to pick and choose your favourite reason.
I know that, but hate on the establishment, hate on the government, why hate English people who are in the same boat as themselves? Nobody is 100% Scottish, and nobody is 100% English.

@atypical_boro has it right: It’s the Government and those can’t accept Scotland, Wales and Ireland are countries in their own right doing their own thing.

The Empire is long gone, The Union may will be soon too.

Going to Glasgow for the weekend, love the people and the place to bits.

I think you will find that the Jock's are good company at sporting events against the English. I was once in a bar before going to Hampden and singing the Angelic Upstarts Song 'England' and had the bar, that was mainly full of Jocks all singing it. I didn't have to buy a drink all day.

I have seen just as much hatred from English people to Scots than any hatred/ dislike I have seen from Scots to English. My view is that the English make a big statement about the Scots and then use it to explain their dislike of them.
In my experience people of the North East are closer to the Scots and have more respect for them than other English regions, despite being a border area.
What's noticeable to me in the South West is the general dislike of people down here for the Welsh, maybe it's because they are historically border areas and the dislike get passed down from generation to generation without ever really being challenged.

Glasgow is one of my favourite cities.

Scotland has invaded England loads of times.
The Scottish King took the English throne.
The Act of Union took place so the Scottish Stuart monarchs couldnt pitch one parliament against the other.

Just for balance 😉😅
As a slightly alternative view LK:
A Scots king was invited by parliament to take the throne of England (that worked well),
The Scots pushed for the Act of Union because the country was skint.

When I worked in Glasgow, I overheard some guys nearby in the office discussing porridge. Somebody mentioned those instant 'Oattso simple' brands. This was met with derision (which by the way is my opinion too). One of them boomed 'I call that Sassenach porridge'.

I wonder if that counts as grounds for constructive dismissal?

It is odd, given that Scots are welcomed into English society. The top English football teams have been managed by Scottish managers, we've even had a Scottish captain of the England cricket team in MIke Denness. Not to mention a Scottish Dr Who.
