Why do Man City want Kovacic?

He obviously doesn't seem to be much of a replacement for Ilkay Gundogan (if he does leave).

Silva is heavily linked with PSG, but again Kovacic is a very different player.

I'd see him as more likely cover for Rodri, but Phillips is still going to be there for that role isn't he?

And Stones is stepping up in to central midfield now too?

Seems a curious signing.

I actually rate him very highly. Chelsea have been toilet this season and I reckon it will be shrewd signing as his value will come down a few million and Chelsea need to get rid of around 50 players.

If Gungogan leaves and/or Silva, I see it as a good bit of business. No doubt if both leave someone else will come in too!

He’s a very good player. Capable of playing a couple of positions in the team. Will get plenty of games

I rate Kovacic, think he’s really good for Croatia. Good do-it-all midfielder and proven in the league. Ideal replacement for Gundogan.

What I don’t understand is why they’re letting Gundogan go?

Doesn’t seem like he’s desperate to leave. He’s their captain and was one of their best players for the last 10 games of the season. Absolutely fantastic player and by all accounts he’s guaranteed to go into management after he retires, he’s apparently like little Pep. Surprised they’re not pushing harder to keep him unless he’s definitely going to Barca, which is understandable - every player’s dream.

I think from reports he was saying that he doesn't think his body is up to another season in the Premier League.

I’m not particularly interested in Man City or any of the money clubs for that matter but they do make strange signings.

Kalvin Phillips for example. Couldn’t believe they bought him.

Pep maybe thinks he can get a bit more out of him than Chelsea. Decent player who has the skills to do more offensively. Could be a decent signing.

I rate him, I think he's pretty good, I just don't see him really troubling the starting XI nor is he a like for like for those rumoured to be leaving. As many have said, a good squad addition who Pepp can maybe get a little more from.

But surely he replaces Phillips?

Very decent player - Gundogan is 32 & it seems Pep & many PL teams don't give +30 y/o players anything more than single year contracts... always seems odd as players play in both Italy & Spain well into their late 30's..

IG's contract is up so maybe Barca offered him more.. racking up their debt..
