Why Didn't We Get Promoted?

Was the pre-season objective promotion?

Appreciate that every team in the division wants to get promoted but given we finished 17th then 10th was it a hugely realistic one?

That said, we finished 7th this season so top 6 should definitely be the objective next season.

1) We didn't and haven't for a number of seasons scored enough goals
2) We have to many inconsistent performances
3) Silly as it sounds, we did not draw enough games. We either won or lost, we need to grind out draws on our off days
4) Lack of creativity from middle of the park

Surely if you finished 10th, then 6th and the play offs was the ambition if not the top 2?

In Warnock's last full season we finished 10th, granted playoffs may have been a (fairly) realistic target for this season but promotion wasn't IMO.

Alot of positives to take away such as Jones and coburn.with money coming into the club from the outgoing players leaving reinvest that into proven players and we will have a chance .Stick with Payero he will come good with the players that will be staying we need to push for automatic promotion.I don't know how long we can hold onto players like Tav and fry if we can't tie them to new deals we will have to look to sell. This manager ,staff and dof will sort it with the necessary backing.

Lumley let in too many silly goals and the strikers didn't score anywhere near enough goals between them. Simple as that.

Letting Warnock start the season.
Forwards not good enough. Neither those brought in under Warnock or the loans in Jan.
Midfield not been good enough since Leads and Clayton. We were overan so many times this season and other teams just out muscle us.
We have needed a left sided Centre Back for quite a few years. McNair is not good enough to play LHS. Never has been(probably not good enough in midfield either so if he doesn't start RHS CB I would get rid of him)
No cover for LS when Bola was injured and then out of form.
Relied too much on Jones and his form dipped towards the end of the season(probably to be expected in his first full year)
Goalkeepers is blatently obvios for everyone to see. Poor poor poor.
Letting Spence stay at Forest and thereby strengthening their team and weakening ours.

Now that the season is over and dust settled what's the thoughts on why we, ultimately, failed in the pre-season target of promotion? I'd offer:

Should've replaced Warnock this time last year to give a new manager a full pre-season and transfer window. Chopping half way through did us no favours when we knew Warnock was leaving at the end of this season regardless.

The loanee forwards signed in the Jan window largely failed to deliver.

The Wilder-Burnley situation completely wrecked our run in. I feel certain that we would've made the play offs if Wilder had not let this run and run.

Thoughts?
Boro hadn’t got any decent strikers.

Joe Lumley's failure to score.

Seriously, I don't think the Burnley thing had much effect, we were already fading. The keeper thing is over emphasised by a few posters, we only conceded 50 goals, averaging 1.09 per game, par for a top ten team. Matt Crook's 3 game suspension was probably more terminal than those factors. The loan strikers didn't work out, buying/loaning in January is risky and rarely successful. It's fine margins, Luton who finished 6th had a one goal worse GD but 5 more points!

I'm interested to see how we build a new squad and team now rather than raking over the failures of last season. A few expected departures have happened, how quickly will we start bringing players in? It must be a relatively quick return to training so I guess a lot of players are getting a few weeks in the sun with families/mates (depending on age). I suppose when they start to come back we will see arrivals?

Not that.
And the change of manager was absolutely right

'Poor forwards and and awful goalkeeper' is pretty much it for me. And basically we didn't step up, and TBF got unlucky, in the big games in the run up. Jones injury didn't help either

No one saw a top six finish with Knocker in charge, so it did end up a fairly positive finish, even if we didn't quite make it.

I'm really happy with Wilder, but let's hope he and the club can bring a bit more quality for next season. Seems as good a Championship as we'll get looking at the clubs coming down

I think changing managers never helps. Yes it was pretty much an instant success. Yet hardly ideal.

I'm not sure when exactly it was but around October we had no fit defenders. I think only Bamba as a CB. This was for pretty much a month.

I don't like to single out individuals. Yet the goal keeping situation really cost us. You could arguably directly blame the loss of around 7-9 points on goal keeping errors. I'm not talking small ones. Absolute howlers.

Then for me it was the January transfer window. We were in a great position and simply one half decent CF away from a real opportunity. I don't really think we improved at all bringing in Connally and Balogun. It was always a gamble as two young lads. Balogun was the 'better' of the two but still looked off it. Especially in the first month or so. We needed an instant response.

To be fair Wilder openly admitted that he wanted 'more seasoned forwards' but finances simply didn't allow it. I guess thats fair enough with FFP etc.

So like most clubs it's a combination of things. I'm sure everyone's fans are blaming missed chances and cr*p forwards etc. Just think we missed a trick in Jan as we were so well set. I don't think any January signing 'improved' us. Just suited the formation better.

Infact our use of the loan market needs to massively improve this summer. We've loaned some right duds over the last few years. It's not like we try to sign any of them. Forest showed how good some top loans can be (they want to buy all of there's).

I have questions about the Head of Recruitment - Kieron Scott.

He was clearly an issue in Warnock leaving which is fine if it was Gibsons decision based on results, but he was everywhere along with Wilder when CW came in, every article and suchlike was about the benefit of KS in attracting CW to the club, yet the first transfer window did not move us on at all in addressing the key goalie and goalscorer positions.

This summer is as much about what actual benefit this lad is bringing to the club as much as CW's ability to mould a team from what he's been given.

Matt crooks missing a couple of games after Xmas didn’t help.. was it a ban because of yellow cards or injury? I can’t remember…
But our form dipped and Isiah Jones seemed to stop running down the right hand side. We didn’t recover on his return and he stopped scoring belters all the time. His return to firm was too late to help..
We did keep singing that song all night long though…
