Why are people so quick to take information from spurious non credible sources

I think it is prudent to consider how much the MSM rely on Twitter and other social media themselves nowadays, and how a lot of articles are just rehashed tweets/posts.

the events are (largely) undisputed,

I think this was the case (esp in the west) but not any more as the real danger of trumps post truth politics was never about fake news ( an awful term btw) it was really about NO NEWS.

His mantra through twitter mainly circumvented the normal mechanisms of western democracy namely accountability and a free an open press to a singular dogmatic dictat free from scrutiny and questioning.

“I will tell you what is and is not - don’t believe them believe ME”

Coronavirus is a hoax
Don’t wear masks they are un American
I had the largest crowd at my inauguration
I win the popular vote
I won the 2020 election by a land slide.

And scarily it worked there are people even in this country that still believe that he won the election despite the facts and the numbers along with the legal cases showing the facts to be verifiably true.

Yet despite all this they refuse to accept it. Why based on what based on one mans view on twitter.

THIS IS NEW - and it’s scary

Don’t forget it was the MSM media that ended Nixon’s time in the White House, it was MSM that exposed cash for questions and the expenses scandal that had been going for decades.

This is why we need the so called MSM this is why we need journalists and top class journalism.

As the Washington post tag line says -

democracy dies in darkness.

Btw Zorro I think this is a good topic thread this, with some good opinions already.

Agree with that
In some respects it doesn’t really matter where you get your information from. It is what you do with it that counts.
There is a search for ‘certainty’ and people become wedded to selected information then seek to persuade others who have chosen other information for their certainty.

I’d probably say our best form of searching for sense is to share information and let people make their own minds up
From personal experience - uncertainty is tortuous but liberating.

There is, however, little we can be certain of other than, of course, hating those frickin Tories (only kidding Coops - each to their own)

My dislike (hatred) of the phrases "mainstream media" and "liberal elite" is that they have both been coined by the right to hijack the disenchantment of people whose concerns and needs would be, by any measure, best served by the left.
What would you prefer as a term to differentiate the mainstream media from media that isn't mainstream?

Agree fully. Zorro isn't wrong when he says journalism isn't dead, but SOME journalists (an alarming amount) are literally just scouring twitter for 'news'. Jumping in the way of bullets screaming 'Why are you shooting at me?'
