There’s a good ethos and camaraderie in this squad but some must know that playing well is like turkey voting for xmas for them…

Chuba, hackney, fry, Lenihan, mcgree, Forss, barlaser and probably Howson will walk into the squad…

smith, Giles, jones and a few of the loaners possibly…

but I can’t see Crooks, mcnair or any of the keepers being guaranteed to stay long

obv there’ll be incoming…

I may be wrong about crooks, I like him and he’s giving his heart to the cause (as are most of them)…

Did we already get promoted? I must have missed that.

????
???? Fry Leinhan Giles (Hopefully)
Barlaser Hackney
??? Akpom Mcgree
Archer (Hopefully)

??? Smith ???? ???? Howson Crooks Forss Jones ???

That's what I'd imagine anyway potentially Mcnair

2 new keepers, first choice right back, first choice right Winger, 2 back up center half (one who could play LB) back up striker

Couldn't see Roberts, Dijksteel, Bola, Mowatt stepping up with us

Wouldn't be surprised if we went up to see Carrick to call on some ex United knowhow.

When we went up before in 16/17 we brought in around 13 players to add to the promoted squad plus another three in January.

Not a patch on Forest this season bringing in 29 players or Fulham a couple of years ago, but still rather a lot.

With such a turnover I think a lot of that ‘winning’ mentality that won promotion was lost.
Plus many of the players were not really upgrades – Espinosa, Barragan, Fischer, then Gestede and Guedioura were all really poor.
Not only that, but we had 8 Spanish speaking players on the books at one point, which led to cliques and a divided dressing room.

I like the fact that Brentford haven’t gone mad after they got the promoted and mostly their players playing in the Premier League this season are the players who got them promoted.

Next time Boro get up, whenever that is (!), then I’d like to see a similar spine/spirit/heart of the promoted squad and we don’t spunk a load of money on two dozen over rated continentals. I think with Carrick and the new recruitment set up, we wouldn’t do that

If you look at West Ham’s squad and they are third bottom albeit underachieving ( may achieve more if they were to appoint a former player currently doing well in his first management job) how many players currently playing in the championship would get into their match day squad?

It’s a massive gulf at present and one which can’t be bridged with just one promotion as Fulham have learned, for most clubs gaining promotion throwing money at it in the summer would not be an option

Howson walk into the squad? Sounds like a bit of sentimentality tbh. I would definitely keep him for depth but even if we dont go up I dont think he'll start many games next season

i agree with the sentimentality, but wasn’t fully convinced he’d be a starter,, that’s why I said probably..

keep the whole squad. lose the loans. try and resign archer and giles. possibly try to bring in a proper defensive midfielder with a bit of pace. another forward with pace. new keeper that can play out from the back. i'd keep steffen tbh. better the devil you know. no point bringing in 10 new players and ripping apart the team. especially if we were to go up. i think the current squad would put up a better fight than karankas team did already.

I think, apart from Akpom, the players we actually own in the team are all on quite a similar level.

I think it would be more a case of who we are able to sign, rather than who we actively want to replace.

If we went up and kept the majority of our current squad and tried playing like we do now we'd have a season like Norwich's recent PL attempts.

That might be the plan, yo-yo and consolidate like Norwich and Fulham have done which makes promotion the following year with parachute payments more likely.

We had the right idea when we went up with Karanka.. we just gambled too far.
