Who was best, Viduka, Boksic or Ravanelli?

Don't know about that. First season he barely played due to injury so fair enough, (but still managed an absolutely sublime brace v Man City).

Second season though, modest return in the league maybe, but cups were the priority and he certainly delivered on that front. 3 goals in the UEFA cup comeback games. That ridiculous goal v Charlton in the FA cup quarter final. Think it was that season he scored that wonder goal away to Birmingham too. I thought he was excellent that year.
He was definitely 'good' in those first two seasons, but he and Jimmy were both criticised for being slow/lazy sometimes. I'm getting mixed up slightly though cos I thought he was here 4 years and just checked and it was only 3.

Viduka was actually best for us under Southgate though, when he was the clear established leader of the side and by far the best player and relished it, although he was clearly after a bigger contract too.

I would say the UEFA final season was his best. The season before he took a month to settle, then he was injured for a large part of it, then came back at the end but wasn't 100%

Second season he was superb and yes final season too. That second season there were so many impressive great performances of which he was important. I would say his second season for us might be the best of his career

7 league goals? I wouldn't agree personally. He was in and out of the side (as all 3 were) and he was integral in the UEFA campaign, but we were never totally dependent on him. In his final season he literally carried the team and stopped us becoming relegation fodder almost single-handedly (prolonged the inevitable) and it was clear the rest of the team was declining.

I will agree with Sheriff that he was brilliant in all three seasons but that doesn't mean he wasn't better in some seasons than others.

I'd love to dig out some threads from c. 2005 on the old board; him, Jimmy and Yak used to get absolute pelters on here! Some of the time it was for being injured (like Boksic) or not fancying it etc. Everyone knew how good they were but it frustrated a lot of people that they weren't always fit and in form.

In 04/05 vidukas debut was v Fulham. He got injured v Norwich. Go and have a look at that run of results. We were top six throughout. Then viduka and George get injured and we drop down the table, before a late rally. I was at the Fulham game. Viduka and Jimmy up front absolutely transformed us. The ball stuck up there rather than bouncing back off the forward. Parlour was also superb in that run. He picked up a knock around Christmas too.

Not disagreeing, I just think he was even better in his final season.

It’s a very tough choice — Vids was supported by several key players while Boksic played in a side which was more workmanlike— Rav you could argue had to work his way not only into the side but also into a team which was experiencing Premier league football for the first time. Basically they all had great pedigree and if I’m honest I couldn’t separate them for class — each one was top notch.

That relegation team the following season would've won the lot. Talk of Batistuta, Roberto Carlos coming in; people laugh when I tell them it would've happened but we were paying far more than anyone else to make it happen. Imagine a team with Juninho, Ravanelli and Batistuta upfront!
People laugh because they underestimate the respect and influence Robbo had in world football. There really is no-one in the modern game to compare. His appointment by Gibson was an absolute masterstroke. Due in no small part to Lennie Lawrence's honesty and humbleness.

He was in and out the side because of the large number of games, not because he was playing badly.

spot on sheriff, he was unplayable for much of that season, but after an injury hit previous season and a lot travelling, he was in and out of the team to keep him fit

Theres a video on youtube that shows his goals for leeds, us and the mags ... he still had it in a black and white shirt but they got very little in return

Rav and Juninho came because we were paying a lot and they knew who Robbo was. They wouldn't have come if it was just down to Robbo, or if we were just spending big, it was a combination of both.

Merson quite openly said he came because we doubled his wage, not because he desperately wanted to play for Robbo, although I'm sure it helped.

Yeah, I remember the same! Time has definitely been kind to Viduka in particular with the 100% consensus now that he was a genius. He used to get stick. Remember that row he had in the car park after the Villa 0-4 when a guy shouted “I pay your wages Viduka” to which big Mark replied, you must be f****** rich, then.

I mentioned that he used to get pelters on here about a year ago and I got pelters for it 😂

I guess when you’ve had 15 years dining on Bart Ogbeche lard sandwiches you realise how nice the oysters were when you could afford them 😁

Very true.

Hand on heart, the 'love' for him only really started in his last year when he was literally carrying us in the league. Before that it was very much a case of 'he's good but we expect him to be good every week'. Easy to forget that in that UEFA final season, we'd come 7th the year before and people expected us to come top 6 at the very least (we came 14th and the chips were very much down until the UEFA run).

Imagine what you'd pay today for a 26 - 28 year old Boksic or Viduka? Bang on form and injury free.
Great question. £50-£75m for a 24 year old version of either in today’s money?

We were paying Boksic £67,000 a week weren’t we before that was normal, was he the highest paid player in the league at one point? Definitely in the top couple. What’s that in 2021 money, about £300,000 a week? Unreal.

Edit: Yep, old school BBC article
£70k a week, the outrage

Of course the money was important but wouldn't have been enough without the new stadium and Robbo. Juninho was the catalyst and he came mainly because of Robbo.
I am talking about the links to Batistuta, Romario, Roberto Carlos etc al.
The Merson yrs were different. Everything changed after relegation in 96/97

I think the Robbo influence is a bit overstated. If we’d signed Romario, why would he have rather played for Robbo than, say, Johan Cruyff or Alex Ferguson or whoever?

Batistuta was linked with us but he wouldn’t have left Fiorentina at that point unless for absolutely silly money. Robbo was well known but he wouldn’t have been revered in Argentina by people like Batigol. I think as Boro fans we get a bit starry eyed about this sort of thing sometimes. Sure, having Robbo helped, but it wasn’t really “the reason” we were linked with these people. Just my opinion.

For some reason, Robbo had a massive reputation in Brazil. We may be starry eyed but the reverse is also true. It is easy to forget how big a name he was. Being captain of England used to be a 'thing' around the world. Before mega-celebrities and social media influences obviously.

Fair enough. Maybe the truth is somewhere in the middle. But I still think players like Romario would have had offers to play for other big names they had huge respect for. It wasn’t like Robbo was literally the biggest name in world football.

On their day Viduka and Boksic were virtually unplayable, but for us I thought Viduka turned up pretty much every game and offered more all round for the team in terms of hold up play, lay offs and goal threat. We had both when they were still pretty much at their peak, same with Rav and Yak. Jimmy was further past his peak I thought, still great and he was influential mentally. We tend to forget about Yak, but wasn't he player of the year? I'm not sure any of the others were, which seems crazy.

My order would be

1. Viduka
2. Boksic
3. JFH
4. Rav
5. Yak
6. Ricard

Although I have the softest spot for Ricard as he won me a bet with my mate that he'd score 15 goals that season. :)
Viduka by a mile.

If he looked after himself he would have played for Real Madrid. Man United tried to sign him from Leeds

If he stayed around I would have added Marco Branca to that list.
