Who Brought The Parmo to Boro 1st ..

Sounds like a question that'll never be 100% answered bit like who does the best ones at the moment (easier answering how long is a piece of string haha)

You could buy a parmo in Australia in the late 70's. I am pretty sure that's where it came from.

It’s a cheese schnitzel brought over from Germany from a guy stationed over there after the war. Due to the anti German sentiment it was presented as a parmazan

There are many claims to the origin of the parmo in Middlesbrough. An entry in wikipedia claims it was created in 1958 by Nicos Harris, a former US soldier who owned the American Grill on Linthorpe Rd.
In the 70s many places served them and they were often appeared on the menu as an Escalope Parmesan. Most also served an alternative, the Escalope Zagaroff. Greek places on Linthorpe Rd (the Rendezvous and the Heleneque to name two) did good ones and as mentioned above, they also served great steaks although I always ordered the T-bone over the porterhouse.

Stocktonites often claim that it must surely have come from there but there is really no history or tradition to back that up.

What about Bibi's on Linthorpe Rd, that was the first place I had a parmo (and none of this chicken rubbish).

Edit: What was the restaurant in Stockton up the side street near The Reindeer pub?

Europa about 1982 was 1st time I had it and as far as I know it was the only place you could get a Parmo in town at that time

Ah, Bibi's. When I mentioned the Linthorpe Rd establishments, I couldn't remember the name of that one. Thanks.

Europa, Steve's Rendezvous and Bibi's were the originals, with a special mention for The Cypriana Fish Grill on Cumberland Road . The queues there for Parmos on a Sunday night were immense.
