Where did our defence go yesterday

No not just the goal but there were a few times when they were through and they had a free man in open space with absolutely no boro player near.

when did this become a thing with us as I can’t recall us being so bad at the back like that.

Welcome to the party, you've noticed, congrats. It's been like that all season BECAUSE WE'VE GOT NO MIDFIELDERS WHO CAN TACKLE/WIN SECOND BALL/BREAK UP OPPOSITION ATTACKS ................ NONE!

Watch the Forest highlights. We offered up several gilt edged chances that any other team would have stuck away.

Were in a mess and we don't need 'a Messi', we need 'a Kante'.

Totally agree with that but talking about at the back we gave up space at the back not just in mf so can’t blame the mf for that it was the defence just vanished

It's what happens when you don't have a defensive midfielder it's been a regular occurance all season. Any midfielders running from deep have a field day against us they just run off the back of howson and his central partner

Again true but that doesn’t excuse the defence vanishing like this.
It was beyond amateurish.

As Glover says our centre mids are not keeping tabs on runners from midfield. Our midfield are allowed to enter our own 18 yard box. It's a team game and defending is not simply the job of the defenders. We've been far too open all season.

Formation - 4-2-3-1 - plenty has been said about stumbling over formations, but that's where we are. so lets get on with it.

Goalkeeper - Lumley - job done

Rightback - Peltier? it's what we brought him in for.. unless we use McNair
Centreback - Fry got to be one of the first names on the teamsheet.. right?
Centreback - Whilst Hall has been amazing I think it takes something away from Fry's game.. doesn't quite click McNair - prem quality defender
Leftback - Bola former Mr Consistency is still the best we have and we have no back up

Defensive midfield - Howson, mr versatile and until Payero gets up to speed our only option.
Defensive midfield - Siliki, still getting up to speed, looks a class act, left sided so a square peg in a square hole

Right mid - Tavernier has been outstanding, hell be off next season if we don't sort ourselves out (Hernandez injured)
Attacking mid - Crookes a genuinly positive attacking threat, again options here are limited
Left mid - Isaiah Jones has been on fire, he's got to start when he's bringing so much to the table

Striker - Sporar has been a bright addition, despite Ikpeazu making a strong start it seems he's been placed back in the cupboard for safe keeping

DUNCAN WATMORE? What has happened there? one of very few positives and bright sparks from last season. insert whatever excuse you want for not us not playing last seasons top scorer.

-----------Lumley---------
Peltier--Fry--McNair--Bola
------Howson--Siliki------
Tav-------Crookes----Jones
----------Sporar----------

It is what it is.. 2nd string looks decent enough, we're paying the price for loaning Spence and Coulson without having the bodies in there to make up the numbers.

---------------Daniels-------------
Dodds----Bamba--Hall----Kokolo
----------Payero--Malley----------
Olusanya--Watmore--Hernandez
-------------Ikpeazu---------------

Lots of take of bringing in a new manager to salvage our season.. we can still turn it around in the next 2-3 games imo Marcus Browne in training is a huge positive and hope he can pick up where he left off before the injury.

What is a new manager going to bring to the table at this point with the same players? a new formation a brand new philosophy?

3-5-2 with our most adept players pushed to the forefront.. maybe a few new names making an appearance from the U23s?

-----------------Lumley--------------
----------McNair--Fry--Bola----------
Hernández--Tav--Payero--Siliki--Jones
------------Sporar--Watmore----------

-----------------Daniels----------------------
----------Hall--Bamba--Wells---------------
Sivi--Howson--Crookes--Malley--Olysanya
------------Ikpeazu--Coburn----------------

Where has our defence gone this season?

No, not just this season. How often did we concede 3 last season. It’s been coming for a while.

Not what you would expect from a Warnock team.

In an attacking sense I thought we looked a different proposition with Ikpeazu supported by Crooks. I'd like to see us return to that combo.

As an aside I've noticed the phrase "there's definitely a player in there" creeping in when posters make reference to a number of our new buys. Bear in mind that we spent four seasons saying that about Ashley Fletcher.

Football.

I would play howson and JLS as two midfielders. Keep it compact. Like Clayton and leadbitter. The important bit is Tav playing as a third midfielder. You've got composure on the ball in Tav. Bit of pace on JLS and Tav to help out howson. Drop crooks. Jones Hernandez or watmore playing the wide positions. Or have uche and sporar playing off him. Asymmetric.

Alternatively play mcnair hall and Fry at the back. Howson right, Bola left. JLS, payero Tav in the middle. Uche and sporar up front.

Howson is not and has never been a CDM and offers no protection to the back four and our lack of one is shocking. Midfielders waltz forward and the defense would normally have time to get into position and mark whilst the opposition is being harried but that doesn't happen so they don't know whether to press the ball or sit back and mark and even if Warnock leaves, the worrying thing is until January we don't have anyone.

As ridiculous as it sounds thinking about it Tav is probably the only player in the squad with the legs capable of putting a tackle in and harrying an opponent like we've seen the numerous times he's shown his work rate and saved us by getting back.

Well,

Reportedly, Savill had to go back to London for family reasons.
Morsy was sold by the club over Warnocks head.

So effectively the two work-horses in midfield have been taken away without being replaced.
Jonny Howson isnt a box-to-box midfielder and is too old and too slow for 90 minutes.

We have no equivalent to control, slow down, speed up or effect the game by spinning the ball out to defenders, then wingers or forwards.
We have no recognised left back cover or [now-due to injury] right-back.

So we respond by hoofing it and hoping for the best or "defending" by passing it back-wards and sideways to avoid leaving the gaping hole between the forwards and the defence.

Whats the situation with Watmore (?) - does he have an increment in salary if he plays more than so many games this season(?) or what?

Something has to give somewhere.....[just a few thoughts]

It's this stupid man marking stuff we do, where we literally follow a player all over the pitch. Other teams have found it out and just have someone move across the pitch to make space. It's dreadful.

Maybe it wasn't such a crazy idea...
