What was up with Steffen last night?

Seemed to be struggling a lot movement-wise - especially late in the first half
Roberts was warming up quite a bit in both halves - rarely see a sub keeper warm up for so long

One dodgy moment during the first half where the cross came in and I felt he could have caught it, but otherwise he was solid. Didn't have much to do though in fairness.

I won't feel reassured about him until he puts in a performance where he makes a couple of crucial saves to keep us in the game, as Randolph often did.

He won't have fully recovered from his knee injury, he was playing with injections.

Hopefully the two week break is enough time to allow it to heal.

If that's the case he shouldn't have been playing.

Possibly not, but Roberts didn't cover himself in glory in the previous match, could have done better with all 3 goals, and Steffen was brought in to be our number 1.

He'll have been desperate to get back playing, only 10 matches before the World Cup.

I don't think Roberts was at fault for any of Cardiff's goals.

I didn't say he was?
There were many players you could blame before him.

But watch them all back, each goal was right at him and they went through him.
Another keeper might well have saved one or all of them.

Steffen was brought in to be number 1, and was always going to get back in the side, Roberts had done nothing to justify being dropped in his first 3 league matches, beyond poor kicking, but he could have done better with attempted saves against Cardiff.

I agree, TeaCider (clever name btw). I would have expected him to save at least two of those shots that cost goals. It is time for Steffen to come back, but he had nothing to do against Rotherham. Let’s see how he does at Coventry and Millwall.

It looked like he took a knock to his right hip maybe, and was a bit ginger on it from there on in.

probably stopped him coming out on a rampage as a back up sweeper.

I was in the North and there were a few groans when he did that, which is ridiculous.

I certainly wouldn't have called it dodgy.

He made a decision to punch instead of catching, and cleared it. Obviously it looked like he could've caught it, but if he did try and catch it, then spilled it - resulting in a goal...then we'd all be fuming and saying 'why didn't he just punch it'.

The bottom line is, he got the ball to safety. Job done.

Double fisting the ball when it was catchable. Personally I’d prefer Roberts, especially since he has signed for Boro and he was the man in possession.

He shouldn't have got his place back yet, Roberts didnt put a foot wrong i dont think, we got a pasting but it was Roberts doing. He was commanding, loved a superman punch to clear the danger. Maybe sometimes he could have caught it but like someone said, if he isnt 100% sure dont take the risk, clear the danger and reset get the ball away and defend again rather than risk spilling or not catching the ball clean. He's a good keeper and he'll go on to be a great keeper and all we're doing is pushing Steffen for City. If Steffen was light years ahead, it would be a different story but he really isnt.

'but he had nothing to do against Rotherham'

He did, he got a crucial touch to push it away from the Rotherham player who was coming in at the back post for a tap in.

Watch the Cardiff goals back.

They were all right at Roberts and other keepers might well have saved them all.

If he was our first choice, I wouldn't be dropping him over that, but I think that's a fair reason when he's here as second choice.
