What segregation?

My old fella took me to Ayresome in the early ‘60s. I’m sure I remember changing ends at half time by walking round the back of the main stand on a gravel track. It might seem unbelievable today but I’m convinced that we frequently passed visiting supporters going in the opposite direction. The two sets of fans usually shared a joke or a cheeky comment as the passed each other but I can’t remember any unpleasantness. Does anyone know when this practice stopped? Presumably when the atmosphere became more hostile?

Happened at Darlo too at Feethams but only the home fans. Tin Shed or Polam End depending on which way they were playing.

Think that stopped Mid 90's though

At York City there was a tunnel behind a stand (Popular End) where there was a big clash in the 60s between York and Bradford Park Avenue switching ends. Rivals I suppose. Go to 2mins in this little video remembering Bootham Crescent for a couple of rival fans discussing incidents in that tunnel.

Went to Norwich in 89, I think, and was surprised to find home and away seating intermingled.

Only time I can remember seeing that anywhere.

Am I right in thinking that in the early 60s and so well before most motorways etc there would be very few away fans at games, apart from local teams?

The first big games I went, Old Trafford, Goodison and Maine Road had fantastic Boro followings, that was 1970 onwards.

There were thousands of Geordies at Ayresome for the Boxing Day game I was at, 64 or 65, and the same when we played the Mackems late 60s, we took a massive following to Roker.

Back then the British Rail had more about them with specials running. Boro station packed when we went to Everton.
