What relegation battle??

And if a spaceship landed on the pitch and stole the ref the game would have been abandoned.
I’ve literally just looked at the table on the BBC and added on the six points from QPR and Birmingham. Never even crossed my mind that we might not get them. I think we can really push on now. Hull have wobbled a bit, everyone below West Brom is much of a muchness. I think we could pinch 6th on the final day.

I've been trying to decide which of these is the most likely, and I just can't decide....
Spaceship.👍

I didn't feel there was any real threat of relegation before last night.

We had 44 points, and that's often enough for survival. However, I accept that it may not be enough this year.

There was 0 chance of us not picking up more points though. We had 12 games left; over any 12 consecutive games you care to pick, even Rotherham have managed to pick up at least 6 points this season.

So, even atrocious form would have seen us crack 50 points. The suggestion we might lose all our remaining games was self indulgent misery-porn.

I think we could pinch 6th and then go on and win it. You go into the summer with that £40m plus the TV revenue and you’ve got what, £100m+ to spend? I can see us bringing in 5 or 6 quality players and having a good run in one of the cups. And then bang, what do you know, you’ve won the League Cup and we’re going into the 2025/26 season in Europe. You can just sense it after tonight.
If we pinch 6th I will pinch the Queen's ar5e in Binns window. Which admittedly would present logistical challenges.

We've been heading for mid-table for weeks, nothing changed Saturday or last night, too many teams above and too many teams below to end up in either play-offs or relegation.

They also play Leeds

Too big a gap to bridge but its the hope that kills you if only we hadn't lost to Bristol, Plymouth and Stoke eh?

The gap could have been 1 point with a game in hand ...
It’s not remotely too big a gap. Win the game in hand, which is certainly not beyond the bounds of possibility, and it is 7 points in 10 games which is a smaller gap than Sunderland made up from the same point last season and only a bit bigger than the one Coventry made up. There’s someone that comes with a late run like that at least every other season. I don’t think it’s likely to be us. It might not even be anyone. But it’s possible.

What's with the negativity?

Why can't we win the PL as well next season.

It's not the points that are the problem: it is conceivable that we could close that gap on any one team.
However, we need to overtake 6 teams to make it, and at least one of them will win in every remaining round of matches. Every time we drop points, some of them will stretch away from us.
That makes it nigh on impossible to close such a gap.

It's not a smaller gap than Sunderland closed either. They were 5 points off after 36 matches. We're 10 points off, albeit with a game in hand. They had to take a total of 11 points off the teams ahead of them to make it, we have to make up a total of 32 points, though admittedly a win in the game in hand could make up 12 of them.

Sunderland also got in with an unusually low total.
I think we would need 75 points this season whereas they got in with 69.

We would need around 28 points from our last 11 matches. It's not going to happen. We are too far back.

Had we not had such rotten luck with injuries this season I think we'd have easily made the playoffs, most of the team last night have been out with long term injuries this season.
