What punishment should be given to a team temporarily playing with more players than allowed?

In today's game - Bayern Munich won 4-1 against Freiburg. For 17 seconds they had 12 players on the pitch. What should the punishment be?

Dortmund given the title and Bayern relegated with additional sanctions and all assets ceased with no further funding allowed................and Schalke can stay in the league below as well

That should suffice

In the nfl it’s a penalty if the coach enters encroached the field so they actually employ people to hold the coaches back.. hold back coach.

Sorry it’s ….. get back coach

According to the NFL, the get-back coach is the staff member tasked with ensuring that players and coaches, well, get back, staying within boundaries and adhering to sidelines rules.

Any serious suggestions (other than RedAsBoros)? Seems a bit harsh to default the match when it was only 17 seconds and is unlikely to have changed the outcome of the game. But obviously it's still breaking a pretty important rule. Curious what people would do if they made the decision.

Genuine answer would be a fine if it had no bearing on the state of play.

I think it would need to be a forfeit of the match it it did though.

I seem to recall this coming up in Pat Partridge's "you're the ref" column in the Boro programme in the 80's.

I think the correct answer was, even if the team with 12 men is losing, the game has to re-start.

It's a pretty serious error by the officials, as they do count the players at the start of each half, or should do.

Substitution. 2 players sent on and only one coming off. They claim the wrong number was shown on the boards and the player didn't realise he was due to come off.

Sport Bild has apparently suggested that the win could be deducted from Bayern Munich with a possible further points deduction. I imagine that's the worse case scenario rather than them knowing what the decision will be. Also I think it's technically the clubs responsibility to make sure they have correct eligible players on the pitch and failing to do so falls upon them. It's just usually the 4th official / ref who helps to maintain this as they handle the paperwork on behalf of the FA etc. The same way it's not the refs faults if a club plays a player who is suspended.

It’s an amusing balls-up but not like they actually expected to get away with playing 12 against 11 for the whole match. Not sure it’s anything but an honest mistake.

Isn’t there a lot of officials whose job it should be to count the players / balls etc? If anything, the 4th official / substitute numbers board guy should probably get a ticking off, but the club can’t be punished surely. It’s not like an unregistered player.
