What opposition player did you always dread coming to the Riverside...

Henry 100%. Great shout on Luke Moore above, kryptonite!

Always found it interesting how we would always give Man U a proper match home and away, and Arsenal would cane us. Maybe a matchup in styles or the amount of ex-United players we had, but that Arsenal team against us was like a horror movie.

He did. It's an absolute fact, that. James Beattie 'n'all

See also: Dean Saunders and Tony Cottee. Both of whom must have scored at least 50% of their career goals away at Boro.

I'm sure Cottee scored twice at the Riverside when he was virtually pensionable. He was like the monster you think has been destroyed with half an hour of the horror film left. But then, just before the end credits...

Can't say I recall ever fearing any individual visiting the Riverside.

We did get a few good hidings from Wenger's Arsenal in the late 90's early 00's, but we occasionally bloodied their noses as well. In the PL we lost 1-6 at home in 1999 but beat them 2-1 at home the following season. We also won 2-1 at home in 2005 but they avenged that defeat with a 7-0 away later in the season. And let's not forget the 3-0 win away in 2001 when we only had one shot on target!

We also beat them in both legs of the 2004 League Cup semi final and deserved a lot more than we got when losing 1-0 in the FA Cup Semi Final in 2001.

Malcolm Macdonald
Fernando Torres
Kevin Keegan
Ray Kennedy
Asa Hartford
Clive Allen
Andy Gray

I had to include Ayresome

...or Ayresome?

For me I always had the sinking feeling seeing Thierry Henry's name on the team sheet in the early 00's, around 2003-2005.

He was unplayable at times then, and always seemed to enjoy himself at our place!

I remember him getting a tap in, when they hammered us 4-0 (2003 maybe?) and he was all over the park that day, couldn't get close to him.
Yeah Henry for me too.

very seldom do I miss a match but exactly 20 years ago today the very match you mentioned I missed it because I was getting married.

Only downer on the day when I finally got to check the result.

Alex Rae. Still can't bear him. Picking up the Arsenal theme, Kanu.
I remember years ago in the middle of the dance floor at the manor born picking this guy up several times from the floor they couldn't stand up at all they were in such a state not drunk either.

Along comes Danny Dichio and drags him off who was the guy who was so off his face he couldn't stand up one Alex Rae
